Scatman Begins: A Prequel To THE SHINING?

Fist of all, the title of this comes from Devin Faraci at Badass Digest. I heard about this the other day but his title was so great I just had to share.

Of course this is a terrible Hollywood idea and everyone involved should be sent to the stocks immediately. Here’s Devin’s article, but check out his site—it’s one of the best mainstream film sites and he has some excellent contributors.

There are bad ideas and then there are bad ideas. One of the worst I’ve heard in a while is this: Warner Bros is considering making a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The studio has approached Laeta Kalogridis, who adapted Shutter Island for Scorsese, to produce. Coming with her would be Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt (ie, the guy who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man, but who worked with Fischer on Zodiac as well).

It’s unclear what the point of a prequel would be; the history of the Overlook is pretty well laid out in the movie and this just feels like an excuse to do a non-remake remake (see The Thing: Prequel to The Thing). The people involved are talented enough to make me willing to listen, but I still will need to be massively convinced there’s any reason for this movie to exist at all.

It’s open season on The Shining, by the way – Stephen King’s sequel, Dr. Sleep, is coming soon, and I bet there will be a movie in production based on that in no time.

Will I be the only one who first thought of the late Scatman John wielding an ax when I read the article? Anywho, I don’t see a point in a prequel or a sequel. If Hollywood would bother to get its head out of its ass and let people with interesting ideas slip into the mix, maybe people will be interested in going to their films again.

Isn’t there a Stephen king sequel to The Shining being written? They should wait for that and then make a film of that, if it’s any good…

Heh heh, “Scatman Begins”. Now THAT sells tickets. But yes, this is a terrible idea. What are they gonna do, make a movie centered around Delbert Grady and his family? It’s essentially the same story with different characters, and we already know what happens thanks to the original film.

I think Scatman begins would be big in Germany…..

These types of films try to delve into the mystery and in the end, the rob the original of the fun that they created.

Prometheus, I am looking in your direction.

Well, I’m not in favor of this at all, obvs. But if they did do it, I could see looking into not the history of The Overlook but the history of Scatman’s character, as he was afflicted with Danny’s gift.

Although in the book Jack does find scrapbooks and such regarding the deep history of the hotel that is about more than just Delbert Grady killing his family, so there are many stories to tell.

The Dark Knight would be inappropiate for the sequel to this prequel.
