I’d assume that the “The Last Script” documentary will be on the second disc. Probably those interviews, too.
Counting down the days to these two Bunuel releases. Can’t wait!
Glad to see Simon of the Desert is at least a lower price since it’s only 45 minutes long. Should have doubled it up with Exterminating Angel.
Yeah, Street Dude, that doc pretty much has to be the main contents of Disc 2. I’m just wondering what new angles we will get on a 2008 retrospective documentary on Bunuel that weren’t covered in the 2000-produced “Speaking of Bunuel” doc that was on Disc 2 of Discreet Charm. I’m not worried about it being excessively redundant – Bunuel’s career undoubtedly has many angles worth viewing it from! But I am curious if anyone here has already seen it, or if the new doc has even screened anywhere. What kind of theaters show films like that anyway? There’s pretty much one “art house” here in town but they tend to show features, not auteur-driven documentaries or other such specialty films.
Steve, I think it’s great that Criterion is expanding on that lower price point. Including it with Exterminating Angel would have probably led to a 3-disc set for $49.95 SRP which obviously could save us Bunuel fans a few bucks but might crimp some sales for people who only want one film or the other… (and let’s face the obvious, separate cases means more $$$ from customers who would buy them both however they were packaged!) I also think Simon merits its own release, it’s such an odd and interesting film. Doubling it up would make it seem like more of a minor or secondary work and it deserves better than that, imo.
IMDB says that The Last Script: Remembering Luis Buñuel is 90 minutes in length…nice.
We have (over on the other side of the pond) a release of The Exterminating Angel on the Arrow label, who are a bit hit and miss. Crucially there are two scenes omitted on this disk which confuse the plot. I hope that Criterion has the complete version.
Steve, I agree, Simon is more like an extended short, and it’s not really one of Bunuel’s best.
Mark, to answer your question, YES the Criterion DVD does in fact have both entrances which is I’m sure a relief for all of us. There is a great technical review of the DVD here:

Within the review there is a confirmation regarding your question.
Some of our members are bargain hunters and/or on tight budgets. Just want to let people know that Exterminating Angel is available at Barnes n Noble on-line at 30% discount + extra 10% off for members and they have a 15% off coupon that’s good until Feb. 15. I just got EA and Simon of the Desert for $41 and change incl. state sales tax and free shipping! (I don’t work for B&N.)
@ Dave—Damn, I just bought that joint at Barnes-n-Noble for $35 after tax. I was waiting for that DVD for so long that I bought it the second the store opened. Why am I so impetuous?
Thanks very much Kev. I will get this sent over sometime within the next month. In case any of you guys are interested we have (here in the UK) an 8 disc Bunuel boxset released by Optimum. There are a couple of extras on each of the DVDs but, I have to say, for some of our films prices over here can be really good. Here is a link for a great price comparison website http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/FCD301.htm
Grab the Fassbinders while they’re going for £12. What a steal!
You guys may wish to check out the Second Run label here which is great for any of you Eastern European enthusiasts. Their prices are quite modest too from around £8 – £10. But as I say they are unparalled when it comes to Easter Bloc cinema from the 50s to the 80s. Please feel free to have a gander: http://www.secondrundvd.com/

I see that Exterminating Angel is going to be a two-disc set but there don’t seem to be all that many special features. Are any details on the documentary available yet? Like how long will it be and how different will it be Disc 2 of the Discreet Charm set? It seems like there are some 1-disc sets in the collection that offer more in the way of bonus features than this one does. Still, I plan to get it as soon as it’s available!
