Sequels That Outdid The Original

I have 3 to offer:

Godfather II
Home Alone-Lost in New York
Addams Family Values

What are some others????

Empire Strikes Back
Hot Shots Part Deux
Star Trek II, III, IV, VI, VIII
New Batman movies

Don’t know about your last two, I saw those when I was like twelve and didn’t really like them. Most Hollywood sequels are just trying to carbon copy the original except ‘Go further’.

I think there are plenty of threads on this topic already.

Superman Returns was even morev ridicolous than the 80s movies, which is an amazing feat.

Goldfinger ( Though the Bond films as sequels is tough because eventually they start to stand on their own.)
Godfather Part II
Babe: Pig in the City
Crank 2: High Voltage
Spiderman 2
Bride of Frankenstein

I’m always torn on if I prefer Evil Dead II over the original.

Everybody mentioned ones I would have said (Empire, TDK, Bride of Frankenstein, and Babe: Pig in the City), so I am going with a harder one.

Three-quels that outdid the sequel:

The Exorcist III
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (Yes, I enjoy this more than the previous two films)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Goldfinger
Toy Story 3
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
The Bourne Ultimatum
Army of Darkness
Lord of the Rings- The Return of the King
Star Wars- Revenge of the Sith (I know, this is like being the tallest midget)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Die Hard with a Vengeance

Hopefully, The Dark Knight Rises (Now, I won’t bet Bane will outdo The Joker, I am just way too hopeful that Bruce Wayne/Batman can be interesting again by giving him female characters actually in the canon).

The Road Warrior
Son of Paleface
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Before Sunset
Charlie Chan at Treasure Island
The Saint in London
Bride of Chucky

The Bourne Ultimatum is the best in the series. Ditto on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

I can go to a 4th film better than all the previous ones…Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

LOL@Jason X. that’s a joke right?

As for Superman 2, i used to think it was better than the original, as a kid, mostly because of the action, but i rewatched it last year and it’s bloody ordinary. Both cuts, but especially Lester’s. Hot Shots 2 i can kind of understand, but for me it loses steam halfway through. Gremlins 2 is corny. i like it, but it lacks the dark edge of the original.

My picks for superior sequels:

Before Sunset
Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey
Bride Of Frankenstein
Mad Max 2
Star Trek 2
Batman Returns

Kinda…but I found it the most fun of any of the others…..and it’s so outrageous….how can you not enjoy it?

Godfather – Godfather 2
Terminator – Terminator 2
Kill Bill – Kill Bill 2
El Pico – El Pico 2
In the mood of love – 2046

Of the dollar trilogy by Leone, if we consider it’s really a trilogy i would say second is better than the first one.

RGRIMES: I hated it at the time, thought it was the second worst in the series. ;-)

And for me one that it’s clearly better the second and third part it’s Apu trilogy’s, first one it’s one like an intro.

Contrary to some, I think BATMAN BEGINS, THE GODFATHER, FRANKENSTEIN, SUPERMAN, and TERMINATOR are all superior to their sequels, that TEMPLE OF DOOM is far better than LAST CRUSADE, and that STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE is far superior to every sequel except WRATH OF KHAN.

Here are some great Hong Kong sequels that beat the first film: SWORDSMAN II, PROJECT A PART II, and A CHINESE GHOST STORY III, which is technically a sequel but almost a remake of the first film but is also a lot better than it.

Going the Hong Kong route, how about DRUNKEN MASTER II

Also, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY.

Someone is going to shit on my but… Human Centipede 2 was a shit ton better than the boring first, and a had a whole lot more going on metaphorically behind all the shock and gore than the original as well.

I meant to say shit on me, but… not shit on my butt. haha

A few more that haven’t been mentioned:

Color of Money
Dawn of the Dead
A Shot in the Dark
After the Thin Man
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Jackass 3D

And two more controversial choices:
Exorcist 3
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Elvis Is King

Gotta check out The French Connection II. It can’t be worse than the first.

@Ari

COLOR OF MONEY is not a controversial choice? You’re the first person I’ve ever encountered who likes the Scorsese better than the THE HUSTLER. I mean, Tom Cruise in that movie is ugh!

Also, while both sequels are entertaining, neither are as good as the original and far more effortless HAROLD & KUMAR
