Seriously bad or an homage to the 50's science fiction movies?

I don’t recall anything about the film that even felt like a possible homage. Then again, I don’t remember all that much about it either.

Yeahhhh but Shyamalan said in interviews that the movie was supposed to be a B-movie like in the 50’s. Everything is so exaggerated: the actors, screenplay… that it can’t be taken serious!

Yeah but I’m sure he said that after everyone saw it and hated it. So he had to come up with some kind of excuse.

Mário Coelho

Perhaps- actually he said that a day before the premiere.

Saying your film is supposed to be like a B-movie certainly does give one an easy out.

I was just making it up. I have no idea. It’s terrible.

But just like “Showgirls”, it is one of those movies so bad it’s good.

I am not in that Showgirls camp. Verhoeven has made many other entertainingly bad films where Showgirls does not do it for me.

I haven’t seen “Showgirls” yet!
I used that movie as an example because many people compare “The Happening” to “Showgirls” …a movie so ridiculous that it becomes entertaining and kind of interesting..

Frankly I think Showgirls is actually good. It’s way more interesting than one is led to believe.

Tommy Wiseau also said The Room was meant as a comedy.

I refuse to see “The Room”.. Now that is a movie without any cinematic value

Showgirls is Citizen Kane compared to The Happening. What an ironic title because nothing happened, absolute shit fest, and this is coming from someone who actually liked The Village and Lady in the Water.

The Room was funny as hell, I don’t buy the “it’s supposed to be bad” line I think it’s just horribly inept filmmaking that comes across as hilarious for that very reason, the way some Edward D. Wood Jr. films are awesomely bad.

The Happening was a bad movie but I do love the premise – nature turns against us cuz we deserve to be extinct since we’re destroying the planet.

I thought it was hilarious, and though its been too long and I don’t remember specifics, I do remember thinking that what I found funny/bad, seemed to be done in such a way where I would be really surprised if it was NOT intentional.

For example this scene:

And here is a compilation of Wahlberg scenes, though some are certainly funnier than others. I also find Zooey Deschanel to be weirdly funny in this, though I’m normally not a huge fan.

This movie confuses me so much. I don’t know if I like it or despise it!

@ Mario: Haha, I thought you were in the “so bad it’s good” camp!!! Is it so bad that it has gone from being good back to being bad? :)

The first time I saw this movie I gave it a positive rating. Second time I changed my rating from a 3 stars to 2 stars. Two days ago I saw it again on tv and I changed my mind again… It’s more of a 2,5 stars!

Showgirls sucks..The Happening was pretty good in my opinion but not as strong as his previous work.

“Lady in the water” is way worse than “The Happening”.
