Sex Scenes

Now here’s a topic bound to get everybody’s blood sizzling! I was watching Jane Champion’s The Piano, and was thrilled with her objectification of the male body, and the sensual nature of the love scenes. Here is a picture of Harvey Kietel just to jog people’s memory.

I love how aggresively sexual her eye is, just feasting on Keitel’s naked flesh! Oh my, I’m getting goose pimples just thinking about it!

Watching The Piano got me thinking about sex scenes in general, and how they’re normally not that sensual. They are either shockingly realistic, or embarassing in an amusing or pitiful way. I thought Champion did a great job, even if she approached the level of corny softcore porn at times!

But my question is where have all the great sensualists gone? And I’m not just talking about sex scenes, I’m talking about filming beautiful women/men (clothing optional). Back in the day there was beauties like Marilyn Monroe & Audrey Hepburn lighting up the screen. It seems as society has become less repressive, sensuality has lost it’s magical appeal, and turned into something tiresome.

And I’m also wondering if women aren’t better suited to filming sex/sensuality? Either that or gay men. I’m reminded of scenes from Almodovar, Paul Morrisey, and even Visconti that are just beautiful in how they portray sex (mostly men in this case).

So what does MUBI think of sex scenes. How does MUBI likes its sensuality portrayed and what does MUBI hate? I say we need more women “pornographers” or rather more women sensualists! Aren’t all women sensualists at heart? :P
