hear, hear
and more importantly, “the shanghai gesture”, whose dvd is very bad
Shanghai has been supposed to be released by Criterion for years now but keeps getting delayed. It’s going to be released some time this year based on an e-mail from CC, so here’s hoping.
I wish for more Sternberg/Dietrich too, like Dishonored (aka Agent-27), a pretty amazing film where she’s an Austrian spy flying around in a biplane with a little black kitten! And all the Russian codes are hidden in piano sheet music.
Morroco is one of my favourites…. a great film, it deserves to be restored and released. Universal had promo copies made here and considered releasing it in Australia but passed!! bastards!……. at least I got a promo copy….
the Eclipse idea is a great one for his earlier stuff.

Is Shanghai Express or any other Joseph von Sternberg film ever going to be released by Criterion? I have been hearing rumours for years now, both about Shangahi Express and about a collection of silent Sterberg films (maybe to be put into an Eclipse Edition). I have been delaying purchasing these films from other sourses (in particular the English DVD release of Shangahi Express), but I am on the verge of giving in and buy them because it looks like it isn’t going to happen.
I really wish they would release some, but with restored prints, unlike their dissapointing release of The Scarlet Empress.
