Here are the results of the poll which finished on New Year’s Day.
This is in order of number of votes for films, according to the rules of numbers of nominated films allowed for participants, and then some are separated in order by extra votes outside the rules. e.g 3 votes within lists of 20 films, + 1 vote from additional favourites over the 20 limit per participant, or when participants only mentioned a few films not the 10 minimum: that would be displayed here as 3 +1, appearing between films with 4 votes and 3 votes.
We had hundreds of films selected and some lists had hardly any films picked by other participants- there was a wide range. And a large number of films with only 1 or 2 votes, many of which may be less well known, from many different countries. Here for now are the films with at least 2 “legal” votes and an extra vote. The Spanish director Val del Omar comes to mind as one who just misses out here with a few films. I will do a list later in the Lists section and may add more films and details here or there.
Thanks to all who took part- so many films i hadn’t heard of, never mind seen.

Poll Thread with full listings
That thread is full of interesting titles to check out. Whereas the shorter result list here is more predictable
kenji, did you mark sansho’s victory with a liquid celebration? La Jetée – Maddin?
yay for this though! i could watch all of these and still not be halfway through a lav diaz. many many suggestions noted on this and the original thread. lovely for those moments when you’ve only got time for a quickie.
Well spotted, just checking who was on the ball. I thought you would be interested in this, after Sans Soleil missing the top 20 of the other mammoth poll.
I staggered to lie on my bed as my head was spinning with Sansho winning the other- not from the drink but the shock.
Only time for a quickie, eh?
I just posted on your wall saying I was looking forward to these results, and lo and behold.
Another great poll – congrats.
It’s a great list, especially for suggestions for undiscovered shorts.Surprised I was the only one to vote for Polanski’s When Angels Fall?
Ah, Polanski didn’t do too well. I quite like his shorts i’ve seen.
Just seen Tusalava, thanks to this poll. Reminds me of my time in the primordial soup before being born as an earthling.
Bump- a lot of people took part, may not have seen this yet.
The best thing I can say: Lots of films to check out!
Looks like older titles worked better here than the Polaris’ exercise.
Yes, lots of film to check out.
But if you vote again I’d like to add some contemporary ones like Bugcrush or something!

Thanks, Kenji. Nice work.
Kenji — did you make a list of these so I can fan it and have it for reference? You make such nice lists… nudge, nudge… :)
There is a list with some additional films, yes :)
Yay! I will fan it as soon as I can get to an updated browser. Thank you, Kenji! :)
So there are Spanish shorts with two votes, I’m happier now. A smile here.
A note: The surviving fragment of Borzage’s The River runs 54’. That said, kudos to the voters of this great film.
Yeah i wondered about the River but didn’t bother to check! From Spain, Val del Omar had 3 films picked twice- one i should have put above (now on the List), 2 others had votes among the extra offerings. One voter picked a lot of films in Portuguese which apart from Ilha das Flores weren’t picked by others.
That was Jorge! He sure has seen all the shorts on the list.
Thanks for this Kenji, looking forward to going through the list and seeing those films I haven’t yet.
I discovered Don Hertzfeldt after I made my list or I would have included him, glad to see him feature here.
Thanks for the great work Kenji! Looking forward to some unknown stuff (wich is like half of this list!).
WTF? Neither Kurt Kren nor Richard Kern on the list? Also Kenneth Anger is awfully underrated. Good job though!
Kren and Kern had votes among loads of different films that didn’t make this list. I suppose i could add all the films picked, it would take some time but anyway the voting thread itself is interesting for variety. Check out the already longer list in the Lists section, with link above
ah too bad im not aware of this poll any sooner, would love to see patrick keiller or andre luiz oliveira and more loznitsa on the list, however it is a superb list, im glad for a couple of brakhage and hutton, wonderful job kenji !
