Chungking Express
I don’t like either one of them enough to own them but that’s just me.
My first reaction was “Chungking Express!”. But Night of the Hunter would look amazing. It might even be considered a more “visual” film than Chungking Express.
Chungking Express. For the color.
Chungking Express.
I could never get behind the idea of older films on bluray, when it is their dated picture quality that constitutes a lot of their charm. Isn’t it a travesty to watch Late Spring in hi-def?
thanks for your thoughts
night of the hunter
I love Chungking Express and was extremely excited when it was announced as a blu-ray release. It has received tremendous praise as a blu-ray release but I just can’t see why. There are far better LOOKING film transfers out there. NIGHT OF THE HUNTER being one. I rented this and even though the movie was just ok for me, (it really hasn’t aged all that well) the look of this blu-ray is outstanding.
I’m afraid your just going to have to get both. Chungking for the great movie and Night of the Hunter for the transfer.
NIght Of The Hunter looks great, Chungking looks average.
Hunter is great
Chungking is average
Both?
Hunter is a better movie, but Chungking Express benefits more from being seen in a sharper image, so go with Chungking Express.
The Night of the Hunter
NEXT!
Hunter is overrated, Chungking is a better movie
“the night of the hunter” is probably the best American movie of the 50S really! ask terrence malick
Harmony Korine as well love Night of the Hunter.
best americanmovie of the 50’s? off the top of my head, Sreetcar Named Desire is just one 50’s american movie that is way better than Night of the Hunter
If I had to pick one, I would pick Chungking Express because I love that movie. I also bought Night of the Hunter on blu-ray as well and would recommend that also but, if I had to pick only one, it would be Chungking.
Night of the Hunter
c;mon
Definitely Chungking Express!
Night of the Hunter
i think you guys are actually making this even harder to choose.. >_< lol
As much as I love Chungking (and I own it on blu), Night of the Hunter is by far the superior film. And I bet it looks crazy good on blu.
Both, that’s always my thought process when it comes to choosing films like this… Haha
And @FANDORIN-SAN older films still look phenomonal on blu, in fact they are well worth getting on the format, providing in the restoration process they aren’t using digital correction or grain removal and such so it still has that lovely old filmic look which by and large they are loyal to keep the analog feel to older films. Your essentially being able to see a reference quality version of the film, imagine being able to setup a projector in full HD.
One film subtly explores perceptions about love and the small ways our facial and body language and our many fears and biases support us and betray our need for it. The other film is another pretty take on the boring old dualistic simplification of human existence into a battle between good and evil. If you don’t know which is which it doesn’t matter which one you buy. If you do, the choice should be obvious.
A really condescending, unhelpful comment. Both are great films in their own right, comparing them like that is rather silly.
The OP implicitly asked for the comparison, I just stated my view.
“A really condescending, unhelpful comment. Both are great films in their own right, comparing them like that is rather silly.”
So because you think they’re both great films, nobody is allowed to disagree? When did daring to have an opinion become condescending? Grow up.
Thoughts on 2 films on a format, simple. I never said no one’s allowed to disagree, I said it was a condescending unhelpful comment for the topic, which it is.
“If you don’t know which is which it doesn’t matter which one you buy.” There’s having an opinion, then there’s that.

Should i get Chungking Express or The Night of the Hunter on blu ray?
