Should I watch Dune?

As a David Lynch fan, I have seen all of his feature films except for Dune. I read that he has taken his name out of the credits due to the studio taking control away from him. I also have read some really negative reviews, so if I watch it, I am not expecting a good movie, but as Lynch fan, will I gain anything from watching Dune? Or is it just a waste of time?

Watch it, and judge it for yourself. You owe it to yourself as a Lynch fan.

The props and costumes are a bit different than the book.
I still don’t know what to think of it.
It’s definitely worth a watch.

Set your expectations real low, that way you won’t be dissaponted and you may even enjoy it. I think its very different from anything Lynch has done, that and the Straight Story. I wish Lynch would do more sci-fi, I bet he would be as good as Tarkovsky.

If there’s absolutely nothing else you could do with two hours.

For a (dated) book-into-movie, I thought it was done pretty well.
It’s still not as good as the book, but that’s rarely ever true

There’s a clip on dlf.tv where he explains how the Dune production were the worst 3 years of his life.

I love Lynch and I don’t care much for this film. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend you see it. Here’s my reason for why you should see it. If you’re like me, and you appreciate fantastic, strange visuals and more importantly SOUND, then it’s absolutely worth a rental. It is a mess, but a worth while one. The sets and characters are at the very least, interesting. It’s the sound design that I really like. I didn’t like it enough to see it again and again, but it sure was worth one sitting. Now, if you’ve never noticed the sound and set design on movies like Eraserhead, Elephant Man and Blue Velvet, then you may want to save your 4 bucks. If you fall into the “it was nothing like the book” crowd, then absolutely pass on it.

Should you see it? Are you being held at gunpoint?

No, he’s not being held at gunpoint, he just doesn’t want to waste 5 bucks. I don’t blame him.

Hold on… nobody said anything about spending $5 perfectly good dollars to see this thing.
If you can get it for free at the library see it, but don’t sepend money on it.

It’s worth watching if you’re a Lynch fan or a sci-fi fan…. just, as was previously stated, don’t go in with high expectations

Ye, its kind of crappy, but I kind of love it anyway. Great costumes and sets, and so many great cheesy images and one-liners- “For He Is The Kwitzatz Hadderach!”

The book, however, is a true SF masterpiece…

Just torrent it?

It’s definitely worth a watch.

Definitely worth a look. DO NOT WATCH THAT HIDEOUS EXTENDED VERSION that was broadcast on TV. It is an abomination, cobbled together from outtakes.

>>I read that he has taken his name out of the credits due to the studio taking control away from him<<
Lynch only had his name removed from the longer version of the film created to fill two nights of network TV showing. Actually that’s the better of the two versions insofar as understanding the story (the theatrical cut has a lot of “huh?” because you’re not getting enough information to understand what’s going on). Visually it’s quite striking, but it is a mess. And yet it’s still better filmmaking that the more faithful, more understandable SyFy network mini-series.

Dune is a book that I would say is unfilmable. To adapt the book (not in its entirety of course) and still preserve the essence of the story would be something I’d say only Andrei Tarkovksy could’ve done – it requires that kind of devotion and philosophical slant that few directors could muster. I could possibly see Malick maybe doing something interesting with it, but even he wouldn’t really cut it I think. There has to be more to a Dune film than merely presenting it as “epic science fiction”, there’s a lot of philosophizing and such in the book that the director would have to address in the film.

Lynch’s version is alright. As mentioned previously by other posters, the film is made well, but “narratively” it’s abysmal.

EDIT: So, to answer the OP’s original question: Will you gain anything from watching Lynch’s Dune? Probably not. It’s a surprisingly unremarkable film (especially from Lynch). One of the few films that I feel rather indifferent about.
