Shutter Island

I started a thread for Tetro and here is my one for Scorsese’s new film. I read somewhere Scorsese has compared this to Welles’s The Trial and Hitchcock at his weirdest. YES PLEASE! Also Scorsese working with possibly my favorite actor, Max Von Sydow is such great news. And once again with DiCaprio who I think is the greatest actor of my generation. I saw a teaser poster that was awesome but I am 99% sure it was fake.

Only disappointment is that when reading about the film on a website someone posted a comment saying the ending. I thought that was a rather douchebag move but no matter I heard there was a twist and what he wrote wasn’t very twisty so maybe he was lieing. Oh well I am still unbelievably excited for this film!

The book is great, the actors are great (Von Sydow, DiCaprio, the kid from the Bad News Bears all grown up), I am confident that this will be a hell of a movie. If it’s at all faithful to the book, knowing the ending would kind of suck but I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

Can I send you a private message asking whether what I read was right or should I try to get as much as a surprise as possible by not knowing what I read was right?

excellent trailer!

There’s no way I wouldn’t be excited about this with Marty behind the lens and the talent in front of it. I thought the trailer showed some flashes of the excellent weirdness that inspired Scorsese when he set out to make the movie. Only thing that bothered me is DiCaprio looked really similar to what he did in The Departed. Not that that’s a bad thing, I thought he gave the best perf in TD, and I’m a big fan. I just hope he isn’t recycling it. Also, I wanted to see more Mark Ruffalo in the trailer. But yeah, I’m there opening day.

Did anyone catch the homage to Psycho in the trailer? There is a shot of water coming out of the shower similar to the one in Psycho. Maybe I’m looking too deep into it, but it seems like Scorsese is paying tribute to quite a few films in this one (in a good way not in a plagiarism obvious way), so I wouldn’t be surprised.

If Leo turns out to have just been the 67th mental patient all along,
I’ll become very disappointed in this trailer and film premise.

Well if it’s anything like “The Trial” or the weirdest of Hitchcock I am certainly excited now

judging by the trailer I’d say it’s like “shock corridor” meets “the shining” meets “vertigo”

and that spinning shot when DiCaprio (I guess is him) is walking through some kind of metallic steps looks very much like taken out from “point blank” when Lee Marvin’s character is getting out of Alcatraz at the beginning of the film…

Bob Richardson’s cinematography looks pretty neat too…

Drew: That’s just fucked up. :|

I guess the good thing is it gives me more time to get the novel.

No because I like Scorsese more than Lehanne (sp?), so I’m not reading the book first.

If Scorsese needed more time to edit then fine, but the fact that its about money is ridiculous (and on top of that, they are going to lose money and awards so no one is winning).

What really bothers me is that I have a feeling they will push it back even further to December 2010 (ex. The Road, Lovely Bones).

Drew: Good thing that I said it gives me time then. I haven’t decided whether I’ll read it or not anyway, but either way a film or a book is gonna be spoiled for me. ;)

Haha ya I was just pointing out there is 0 silver lining for me. I guess all I can think of is Shutter Island still has the chance to be my favorite film of the year (it had no chance against Tetro), in 2010.

Watch I bit Tree of Life goes to 2010 also

God this sucks!

I’m now really worried…… this sounds like BS. If the studio believes in the movie they almost never move it’s release date. Why February? Oh well because “Silence of the Lambs” came out then and……FUCK THAT! That was like twenty years ago!!! That screams PR cleanup 101. This film is done…. if you go to imdb you will see that the film clocks in at 2hr28 minutes. It’s rated R. On top of the cool trailer that has been out for a few months there is already a great print campaign out….. the latest poster is awesome and it reads October 1st. So my theory is this….. Marty means what he says…. this film I think is too weird and maybe complicated for the mainstream. Maybe Paramount wants him to make a tighter edit of the flick. I hope I’m wrong about all of this…. but if the studio really believed in the flick they wouldn’t have bumped the release date.

Sadly this reminds me of the state of another film I’m dying to see….. “The Wolf Man”. I know this film was suppose to come out last spring and then this november but now it’s also been bumped to February….. hmmmm… so Universal can make the director reshoot and edit the film. Maybe make it PG-13…. well why not it did cost 75 million….. FUCK!!!! “The Wolf Man” looks great and it’s tone looked like that of a classy old school horror flick…. maybe that didn’t test well with a younger audience.

My conclusion is this… it’s hard to see films your dying to see pushed back and then here whispers of a little nip and tuck action. I hope everything I just wrote is not true….

Fredo

Has this actually been confirmed? I would be shocked if a recent Scorsese film was released in February – the only reason would be because the film is not testing well and the studio thinks it’s not going to be an Oscar contender (see The Soloist, The Brothers Bloom). That’s too bad if Shutter Island does in fact get pushed to next year – I was really hoping this film would be good (and any film released by a major Hollywood director like Scorsese in February has CRAP written all over it).

And if it’s b/c Scorsese is still working on it, then that’s tough shit for him. They started shooting in the Spring of 2008, right? He’s had ample time to finish this film.

And if it does in fact get released next February, that will be three films Eastwood will have released since Scorsese released his last film.

Drew Gregory

Good for Eastwood. I say give Scorsese all the time in the world if that’s the way he wants to work.

What I don’t like is the studio pushing it back due to money purposes!

Nathan M.

Fredo – Let’s recall that “Zodiac” came out in Feb. if I remember correctly. Of course this is all idle speculation, but maybe (who’s releasing it again) the studio is really flummoxed by this new film. Maybe it’s not the Oscar prestige picture that they thought it would be. I’ve enjoyed “The Departed” and “The Aviator”, but it’s hard not to feel like Scorsese wasn’t challenging himself in a serious way with those films. They also seemed far less personal to him than any other film I can think of before them. So, maybe “Shutter Island” is something more complex, and less likely to win an Oscar. Again, it’s only speculation. Frankly, I don’t give a damn when they decide to release it, as long as it’s good.

Drew Gregory

Good point Nathan. Maybe the studios freaking out is a good sign.

Still I want to see the film as soon as possible!

This article: http://thecelebritycafe.com/features/32173.html (sorry I don’t know how to make URL’s into fancy words and all that, so I just put the address on there. Cut and paste it if you want.) suggests that Paramount is moving the release date in order to save money on the advertising costs that come with an awards season film. Huh? Why not just reduce the advertising budget, and let the movie stand on it’s own? It’s a Scorsese picture, so it probably doesn’t need a million billboards floating around Los Angeles to convince voters that it might be worth a look. If there’s any truth to what this article is saying, I’m completely baffled at Paramount.

Drew Gregory

Here

That is bizarre. Just don’t worry about awards dumbasses. Its like they think they have no self control or something.

Fredo

Zodiac was released in February but Fincher is not Martin Scorsese. Fincher is never talked about in regards to Oscars while Scorsese’s name comes up regarding Oscars every time he releases a film. And coming off his Oscar win for The Departed, you would think that if the studio thought the film had even a remote chance at winning awards, they would release it in the fall. Awards mean more money for the studio and dumping a film in the doldrums of February is never a good sign for a film. And the funny thing is, the early buzz on the film is that it would be an Oscar contender.

“So, maybe “Shutter Island” is something more complex”

Well, that very well may be but having not been overly blown away by anything Scorsese has done in fifteen years, I highly doubt it. I know we all hope for him making another Raging Bull or Taxi Driver but at some point we just have to accept him for what he has become; that is, a good director but not a revolutionary director the way he once was.

Nathan M.

Fredo – You’re right – dumping to February (or January, or March) is rarely a good sign. I only brought up “Zodiac” to suggest that a very good film did come out in February only two years ago. So, while Fincher certainly isn’t Scorsese, it is possible to imagine that the movie could be good and be released in the dead of winter.
