No need to be sad. He lived a long life doing something he loved and gave us many great films that we cherish until we die.

I was recently blown away by one of his unknown films, “Strip Search”, not to mention immortal classics like “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Serpico”… LEGEND

Lumet had to know he created a body of very solid work. It mattered. I will hold a good thought for him.

I wish there was a great biography of his life. He was truly remarkable.
This does not mean that I loved all of his films, but I responded fully to his best work:
“Long Days Journey Into Night,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “12 Angry Men” and much of his other stuff.

Very sad news. Lumet was a favorite of mine. “The Verdict”, “12 Angry Men” and “Network” will forever be among the best films I’ve ever seen. Rest in peace Sidney!

I read his book Making Movies and it just confirmed my thoughts on him as a solid director, and now since he has died, I’m even more pleased to have selected him for the DC and have the chance to select some of his works to highlight.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead was all levels of crazy.

A fine director. Old-fashioned craftmanship, even if a film wasn’t completely successful.

Can we finally get his overlooked masterpiece “The Hill” on Blu-Ray, perhaps by Criterion?

Met him once. Lovely man. Thoughtful films. Will never forget his take on “Serpico” when any other director would have made it a cheap action-y genre piece. RIP.

He was really a great director of actors: Paul Newman and Charlotte Rampling in the Verdict, Rod Steiger in the Pawnbroker, Peter Finch in Network along with Faye Dunaway and the other guy in the film, I can’t remember his name!, Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. It’s fine for some filmmakers to make their films in L.A., but I like the fact that he sort of managed to keep himself in NYC to really make his films. He sort of called his own shots. And from what I read from the book he wrote, he had great control on how he would go about shooting his films on his own schedule. Again, I know other filmmakers work on different schedules, but I admire his sort of disciplined lifestyle. A great director. He truly will be missed.
