hello all, im a big fan of terrence malick, the fact that he only directed 4 movies so far is kinda frustrating to me, so i will be very delighted if you guys could give me some recommendation of movies that feels similar to malick’s work.,

on other forums so far i found david gordon green’s george washington (which i like very much) and undertow, and andrew dominik’s jesse james., but since this site is THE best site about movie (lol), im sure you guys could give me a broader and wider recommendation.,

thanks

Well, I’m a HUGE fan of Undertow. I know it often gets a bad wrap for whatever reason, but it’s the best Malick film that Malick didn’t direct (he did produce it though – and had a hand in the voiceover approach I believe). David Gordon Green is a filmmaker that kind of pops up here and there with something creative, but (with the exception of George Washington) pretty much just hits the same notes over and over again. Anyway … Undertow is highly recommended.

But to go back a few years BEFORE Malick, Ozu and Bresson are commonly regarded as transcendentalist filmmakers so those would be obvious ones to check out. Even Paul Schrader’s work kind of reminds me of Malick in a strange way (Scorsese’s Taxi Driver which was written by Schrader shares a lot of similarities stylistically) – he also wrote a book on the subject of transcendentalism in film.

Oh course, Malick’s own Tree of Life is coming out this year or next year I think, so that’s exciting.

EDIT: And I’m reaching on this one, but Hillcoat’s The Proposition is rather transcendental.

thanks a lot deckard, thats explains a lot why taxi driver is in my top-5 film of all-time and bresson is my second favorite director and am currently exploring ozu with full excitement now.,

undertow is already on my radar, and i will try to see the proposition now (i own the film but neglected it for a long time, lol)., so, thanks once again mate !

THE ASSASINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. I think that is the title. Very Malickish. Surprised no one else mentioned it. Great flick.

Well, there’s a thread or two on imdb, and here’s a list I posted on another site:

The Assassination of Jesse James
George Washington
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Come and See
Walkabout
Picnic At Hanging Rock
There Will Be Blood
Paris, Texas
Rabbit Proof Fence
The Warrior
Dead Man
Gummo
The Spirit of the Beehive
Aguirre; Wrath of God
Killer of Sheep
Elvira Madigan
Two Lane Backtop

I’m not saying these are perfect correlations with his work, just that they share a few similarities.

I recently watched I AM LOVE with Tilda Swinton and it had a similar feel (amazing imagery with incredible classical music) to a Malick film. I’d recommend it. I really enjoyed it. Keep an eye out for that one.

I saw a Wheat Thins commercial not too long ago which I thought was Malick-esque. It was very…willowy.

He mentioned it in the first post, actually.

@Joe,
Ha, actually I didn’t intend that to be a “new world joke,” but I guess it works as one. I was just being goofy/stupid, since everyone around here knows Cameron and Malick have nothing in common.
