I have watched this film several times and I’m always impressed by it. Must be one of the best American films of the last twenty years.
Concept and execution work so well, especially considering the budget… I just watch it in awe.
PS
The commentary track is one of the best I’ve heard for any film- very informative and straight to the point.

This is really one of the only Linklater movies—along with Dazed & Confused, that I can stand to watch. Awesome movie.

This is one of my favourite movies ever. It is brilliant, the characters, the dialogue, the transitions – all so perfectly executed. On first viewing I was underwhelmed by the conclusion but on multiple viewings I came to see that final scene as somewhat self-referential, as that was what Linklater seemed to be doing; going around with a camera and filming everyday people. Also, that last scene showed the fun and excitement that comes with movie making.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on an authentic Madonna pap smear? Thanks.

Slacker just has such a good nature about it. It radiates such joy and such wonder. You can definitely tell that every single person working on the film had an insane time working on it.

And it really makes you want to go to Austin. It’s weird. Austin is probably one of the most popular cities in America but it seems that, until Linklater, it was neglected.

Squiffle: There’s a great bonus feature on the Criterion release that shows how the city has changed since Slacker was made. Really interesting.

Austin perhaps wasn’t as visible a cultural center back then as it is today, but there was a hell of a lot going on there in the 90s, especially with the tech industry. Oddly, some major events in the history of hacking and cyberculture occurred there, making it kind of a landmark for that subculture.

I hate to say it but I hated this movie. It had a decent script but was ruined by probably the worst acting I’ve ever seen in a movie. I was cringing the whole time to be honest

Slacker is a unique movie that started the career of a unique filmmaker. I don’t think it is one of Linklater’s best. The movie meanders (which was pretty much the films intention) without having any kind of overarching premise. It just concludes when it wants to. Slacker seems more like a practice run for what would be Waking Life. That movie had the character of Willy Wiggins to give the film a structure.

The package for the film is pretty much the reason I love the Criterion Collection. There is no other publisher that would release It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books. The commentary for that film is one of the best I’ve ever listened to. Any creative person in their 20s should listen to it.

I love Slacker. It seems like each vignette is a unique and true insight into the life of a new person. It’s quite hard to characterize, but the sheer uniqueness of it, along with the fact that most of the conversations they have are conversations I would gladly take part in in real life, makes me happy.
