SO, WHEN THAT CRITERION B&N SALE ROLLS AROUND....

Ryan Michaels

What are you gonna pick up?

As for me, the Rossellini War Trilogy, Rashomon and Stagecoach are total must-buys, and Battle of Algiers, Andrei Rublev and Walkabout would be nice.

I certainly won’t be getting all of these, probably only three, but I’m considering:

Short Cuts (Altman, 1993)
Wild Strawberries (Bergman, 1957)
The Exterminating Angel (Bunuel, 1962)
Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau, 1948)
White Dog (Fuller, 1982)
Breathless (Godard, 1960)
Vivre sa Vie (Godard, 1962)
Band of Outsiders (Godard, 1964)
Masculin feminin: 15 faits precis (Godard, 1966)
Made in U.S.A. (Godard, 1966)
The Lady Vanishes (Hitchcock, 1938)
M (Lang, 1931)
Slacker (Linklater, 1991)
My Dinner with Andre (Malle, 1981)
La Ronde (Ophuls, 1950)
La Plaisir (Ophuls, 1952)
Lola Montes (Ophuls, 1955)
An Autumn Afternoon (Ozu, 1962)
Night and Fog (Resnais, 1955)
Last Year at Marienbad (Resnais, 1961)
Solaris (Tarkovsky, 1972)
Playtime (Tati, 1967)
The Last Metro (Truffaut, 1980)

All of these are at my local B&N if I remember correctly.

I thought that sale was along time ago, I literally just heard about it tonight, going through the site.

The Naked City- Dassin
Thieves Highway- Dassin
The Testament of Doctor Mabuse- Lang
Wild Strawberries- Bergman
Schizopolis- Soderbergh
Gimmie Shelter- Maysles
L’Avventura- Antonioni
Red Desert- Antonioni (thrilled that Criterion picked it up, I’ve never had the chance to see the whole thing)
Ali: Fear Eats The Soul- Fassbinder

MH, the sale rolls around every five or six months or so. I have no idea if it is starting again soon. I used to be employed at B&N and they’d tell us a month or so beforehand. I have no idea if they’ve given any indication that they’ll continue doing the sale regularly or if everyone just assumes that they will.

I’ll have to see what they have in stock when the time arrives.

Mystery Train (if I wait to get it, probably won’t)
Night Train to Munich (see above)
Hunger
Breathless
Spartacus
Shock Corridor
Naked
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
…and their supply usually varies so I’ll what they at the beginning of the sale.

Just in the past few days I bought:

Army of Shadows – Criterion Collection
The Rules of the Game – Criterion Collection
The Sword of Doom – Criterion Collection
Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection)
The Battle of Algiers – Criterion Collection
Le Samourai – Criterion Collection
John Cassavetes – Five Films
Sawdust and Tinsel – Criterion Collection
Army of Shadows – Criterion Collection
Grand Illusion – Criterion Collection
The Killers – Criterion Collection
The Complete Mr. Arkadin (aka Confidential Report) – Criterion Collection
A Woman is a Woman
Berlin Alexanderplatz

That clears our my “to buy” list for now, but I’m sure I could find 10-15 more if another 50% sale comes along.

There’s currently a 25% off sale for certain DVD’s and blu-rays at www.deepdiscount.com. Their prices are low to start with (and free shipping!), so a lot of the Criterion titles are now $24 or $18.. So not quite as good as B&N’s half off sale, but still decent prices for Criterion titles.

This is what I’ve got on a little list right now. Originally, I had the Rossilini War Trilogy as the first thing I was going to get, but after I found it used for $30 at a video store, I couldn’t pass that deal up. So, here’s my short list:

Olivier’s Shakespeare set (my new #1!!!)
Revanche
Spartacus (still debating on whether I want Universal’s new BR or not, though)
Young Mr. Lincoln (after getting “Stagecoach”, I suddenly realized that I need some Ford)
Rules Of The Game (still can’t believe I don’t have this…)
Mr. Arkadin
Ali: Fear Eats The Soul (I got Berlin Alexanderplatz during the last sale, so I think it would only be fair to get some more Fassbinder)
The Leopard (So happy the BR will be out before the sale starts. I’ve been dying to see this movie since I heard about it.)

Although, if any of my local stores have copies of some of those OOP StudioCanal titles, I would definitely grab one.
