Just asked someone who works and BN and they said it begins July 20th.

ohhhhhhhh. kicks dirt this sale is the worst thing that happens twice a year. I can’t afford this kind of stuff! Why does B&N torment me so.

Orphan Seasun

I’d hold off on the Andrei Rublev, Ryan. It’s going to see a remaster sooner than later.

I can’t afford this, but I’d love:

Brakhage 1 & 2 blu-ray
Rossellini’s War Trilogy
Godard’s Vivre sa vie blu-ray
and one of: La Notte, Harakiri, Stagecoach, Pandora’s Box, or another Eclipse box.

And because I probably will bow to temptation and buy some of these, I better end the list there so I can pay my tuition in August.

There’s a sale? Just recently I bought Made in U.S.A., L’Eclisse, The Naked Prey and Phantom of Liberty, for less than $25 at B&N online. Or was that a different sale? Hopefully in time for the new releases. I can’t wait to see the remastered Black Orpheus soon.

Can’t wait for this… though I just bought a ton off of ebay and at the 50% all Blu-Ray 4th of July sale at Border’s… so I’ll probably not be getting all that much.

This is what I’ve got planned

Definitely:
-Yojimbo/Sanjuro Box – Blu
-M – Blu
-Bigger than Life – Blu
-Days of Heaven – Blu
-Gimme Shelter – Blu
-Kicking and Screaming – DVD
-Make Way for Tomorrow – DVD
-Dillinger is Dead – DVD

And maybe:
-Black Narcissus – Blu
-The Red Shoes – Blu
-Red Desert – Blu
-Eclipse – Postwar Kurosawa – DVD
-The Last Days of Disco – DVD
-2 or 3 Things I Know About Her – DVD
and
-Night Train to Munich – DVD

When it actually comes down to it, though… I’ll probably buy a whole lot more than I should.

Im just curious….what are you guys planning on spending? I need someone to tell me they are spending like $800 so i will feel better about spending like $150 lol

Timothy Boyer

I’m really only planning on spending between 120 and 175 (though it may come down to more like 200 or 250 buy the end of the sale)… the list I’ve posted is obviously more of a blueprint than anything… with the definitely list being more of a “I really have my eye on most of these” and the maybe list being “Impulse buys, or I decide to abandon picks higher on my list.” or “It’s the last day of the sale and Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes are too bloody beautiful to not buy on Blu.”

If I had 800 to spend on this sale I definitely would… there are a lot of Criterion’s that I’ve been eying for quite some time and just haven’t gotten around to.

What I’m really saying is don’t even start to feel bad about spending 150… unless you’re starving your family in order to do so. lol.

Leeches: Last time I spent nearly $2,000 on the last sale. There were far too many things I wanted. This time around, I’m budgeting around $200 but we’ll see… my primary interests is the Rosellini War Trilogy, a few Eclipse and the two Bergman box sets. Possibly a few singles but I’m good….

The only thing I can recommend is that if you are spending over $100, get the B&N card on purchase of your first major order because it pays for itself as you get the extra 20-25% off and once you start repurchasing, you notice that the extra online or in-store discounts really come to play big time.

Ya ya, I just got the membership a couple days ago. I wanted to get it a little earlier so I would have the coupons in time for the sale. :D

I’m going to have to have a lot of self control next Tuesday or I’m going to end up broke. I have narrowed my possibilities down to these:

Carl Theodor Dreyer Collection
Brazil
In The Mood For Love
Vivre Sa Vie
First Films of Samuel Fuller
Jules and Jim
Brief Encounter
Umberto D.
Trouble in Paradise
Band of Outsiders

Now I just need to decide which ones I really, really want right now. This is not going to be easy.

I was thinking of spending 200, but I’m gonna try to limit myself because I’m going to be getting a new guitar soon and that’s gonna kill my savings.

Does anyone know if the sale is applicable on Pre-Order items? They have Charade, Breathless and The Thin Red Line up already and I’d love to know if the sale will work on them.

I’ll likely give it a shot anyway, but I wanted to throw it out there to see if it’s a known fact whether or not these sales work on pre-orders.

@Timothy

The sale does not work on pre-orders. (This comes from having tried the last time the sale happened.) Sorry :(

Good to know… this is actually a good thing as it will save me a ton of money! Thanks!

My new list:

8 1/2 Blu
M Blu
Hiroshi Teshigahara box set
The Exterminating Angel
Science is Fiction: 23 films by Jean Painleve
(maybe Naked Lunch or Brazil)

What do you guys think the chances of a Brazil blu ray coming out in the near future are? I have a feeling criterion will release one but no information to back that up lol

i’m struggling here. so far i know i’m gonna blind buy Ivan’s Childhood, because i’ve had nothing but great luck with Tarkovsky in the past. i’m very probably going to roll the dice on Red Desert too, because although i’m less familiar with Antonioni, it sounds too far up my alley to pass up and i’ve been wanting to see it for a while.

where i’m struggling is with Bergman. i need more, but i can’t decide between The Virgin Spring and Cries & Whispers. both great films, but TVS is more expensive, because it has more features.

i’m also giving serious though to a blind buy of Last Year at Marienbad, since i loved Hiroshima Mon Amour. Breathless, a couple of Fellinis and a couple of Terry Gilliams are also mighty tempting. oh, what to do…

Rob Frenay

Just got Rosselini’s war Trilogy for $35! Kickass.
