SO, WHEN THAT CRITERION B&N SALE ROLLS AROUND....

Joshua

I’m trying to only get three and can’t decide between:

Two-Lane Blacktop
Days of Heaven
Revanche
By Brahkage Anthology: Volume 1
Solaris
The Wages of Fear
Any help?

Ryan Estabrooks

Definitely Solaris. I would personally rent Two-Lane Blacktop before blind buying it if you haven’t seen it. By Brahkage is the BEST when it comes to experimental films, especially on Criterion. Anytime a friend comes over and says “Show me something awesome”, I usually pull out one of his short films. It’s amazing stuff. Wages of Fear is pretty good but not the masterpiece that everyone made it seem like it was. And I can’t comment on Days of Heaven or Revanche since I haven’t seen either (but stare longingly at them when I see them in stores)

I suggest Days, Revanche and interchange Brakhage or Two Lane for your last one!

Wages of Fear is the only masterpiece on your list.

Solaris is Tarkovsky’s 4th best movie at best.

REvanche looked completely boring and typical contemporary crap.

Days of Heaven is very good.

Brahkage is a waste of time and effort

Never seen Two Lane black top.

Two-Lane Blacktop is not a very good film. The only way I see anyone appreciating it is if they are fond of over intellectualizing dull film.

Human Form

Wages of fear although great, is something I think he can hold off on. I also think Sorcerer is just as good though.

Any help?

Two-Lane Blacktop
Days of Heaven
By Brahkage Anthology: Volume 1

So far I’ve gotten Bigger Than Life (BD) and _Clean, Shaven.

Joks

Sorcerer is just as good as Wages Of Fear? now i’ve heard everything! ;-)

my purchases, all blu-ray:

400 Blows
Bigger Than Life
Close Up
Paris Texas
Wings Of Desire

Human Form

I think. The main thing about wages was how well the suspense played out the whole time. I think Friedkin for the most part managed to keep that one important element in his remake.

But anyways I ordered two by ozu online and am going in store tuesday to pick up the powell and pressburger’s, 400 blows, le jetee/sans soleil and eric rohmer

Ryan Estabrooks

@Matt Parks, personally, out of those 3, I would definitely get By Brakhage. There are so many things in that set that you will have NEVER seen before. Seriously. If you have any tiny bit of interest in experimental film, you must get that. That’s my opinion anyways.

@ Matt Parks: Doesn’t seem like you can go wrong with any of those.

I got the new Brakhage, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Shock Corridor, Bad Timing and Scenes from a Marriage. I wish I remembered to order Equinox too.

I didn’t even know the sale was going on until I happened to stroll by a B&N. Here’s what I came out with:

The Passion of Joan of Arc
Rosselini’s War Trilogy
Repulsion
L’eclisse
Last Year At Marienbad
The Exterminating Angel

Only two of those eight I’ve already seen. Resnais is probably the biggest name left I’ve never seen a single film by.

I bought twelve blu ray discs, I’m just missing 5 more.
does this sale of Criterion comes often?

Ryan Estabrooks

Micky_ward, about twice a year.

too bad, I better make best of it

Justin LaLiberty

I have picked up the following so far:

Mystery Train (blu-ray)
Everlasting Moments (blu-ray)
8 1/2 (blu-ray)
Empire of Passion

I also pre-ordered:

The Red Shoes (blu-ray)
Black Narcissus (blu-ray)

I can’t see myself getting much more this sale though I am tempted by Close-Up, which I am considering getting.

Justin LaLiberty

@Matt,

I would go with either By Brakhage or Days of Heaven. Two Lane Blacktop is really worth renting if you have not seen it and I can’t bring myself to recommend it as a blind buy at all. The Brakhage set is great but I’m hesitant to recommend that seeing that the blu-ray set that recently came out contains both Volume 1 and Volume 2 and is really well packaged. If you’re thinking of upgrading in the future than I would hold off and just go that route and pick up Days of Heaven this time. You really can’t go wrong with either though.

I purchased all of the Eclipse sets, assuming they would be least likely to be reproduced in high-def. I also added Fassbinder’s 15 hour epic. I already own every blu-ray except RED SHOES & BLACK NARCISSUS which I’ve had from BFI since last year. My wife now hates me, but she rarely complains when we watch movies in the theatre!

It seems like every time this B & N sale rolls around I end up obsessing over one filmmaker and buying everything of theirs. Last time, it was Melville. This time it looks like it’s going to be Powell & Pressburger. I just bought Thief of Baghdad, A Canterbury Tale & 49th Parallel in store. And I’ll order the Red Shoes & Black Narcissus Blu’s, I Know Where I’m Going & The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp before it ends. Then I’ll have them all. Next sale Bergman. I better start saving now.

keldon

I picked up Che and Hunger on Blu the other day. Love those films.

Going for the Brakhage set and Revanche today, and maybe I’ll splurge on M and Days of Heaven as well. Again, all Blu.

Max Renn

Breathless
Two Lane Blacktop
The Battle of Algiers

There were so many more that I wanted to get (The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Shock Corridor, Bicycle Thieves, Walkabout, Wings of Desire, etc) but I couldn’t since I just got laid off.

dope fiend willy

I’m sorry, I had Revanche confused with another film that has nothing in common.

Summer Hours was the boring film that I was thinking of.

Revanche, on the other hand, does look a little slow, and too much talking for a so-called neo-noir. Shoddy camera work, as well.

tibber

Revanche might be slow, but there’s nothing wrong with the camera work. not sure neo-noir is an accurate description either.

oh, and thanks, justin. that should work out good for me.

Hey guy, I post here something but anyway do criterion sells happen alot or at all?

I’m trying to spend under 100 dollars and so far i have videodrome, solar, the killing of a chinese bookie, and down by the law. Is that good? I dont have many dvds, i usually spend my money on clothes and LPs so my dvd collection is made up of films by wes anderson, bergman, and woody allen I purchased for cheap various stores.
