Songs That Remind You of Films

There’s a song by Rob Dougan (famous for his song Clubbed to Death, which was featured in The Matrix) that I find reminds me a lot of Tokyo Story. Listen for yourself and see what you can find.

Are there any songs that remind you of a particular film?

Any song that was in “Dazed and Confused”… I’ve seen the film at least a few hundred times, and now whenever I hear any song that is on the soundtrack, I’m thrown right back into the movie. Especially with Bob Dylan’s “Hurricane” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone.”

There’s so many more, too… I’m really big into the use of music in movies – both scores and soundtracks… but mostly the latter. Not because I don’t like scores, I just analyze them differently. Plus I find that – since it’s written for the film – there are more scores that work perfectly than there are soundtracks.

I’m extremely interested by the songs that are picked for films… why were they picked? Were they picked after or before the scene was completed (in other words, is the song the scene’s or is the scene the song’s)? Was it chosen to capture certain moods within the scene? Or the film as a whole? Or both? Or was it chosen simply because that’s what the filmmakers could get/afford the rights to?

Even songs that, according to the filmmakers themselves, supposedly have no significance for being in a certain scene, always seem to have some sort of correlation to what’s going on. Nothing ever is random.

Hi! I made a list of songs that remind me of certain films/directors. Work in progress.

Well, Kill Bill effectively killed my love for that Nancy Sinatra song, so I’m reminded AND depressed simultaneously by that one.

I heard “My Boyfriend’s Back” (I think that’s what it’s called) on the radio and I INSTANTLY thought of Scorpio Rising.

Peter Gabriel’s “Family Snapshot” reminds me of Taxi Driver, both were inspired by Arthur Bremer’s actions and book “An Assassin’s Diary”. And other films come to mind dealing with similar issues, such as The Assassination of Richard Nixon.

Whenever I hear the song “Paper Airplanes”, I think of ‘Badlands’ , I suppose because both deal with violent subject matter in a detached, almost dream-like way.

Also, the musical “Follies” reminds me of Fellini far more than “Nine”, the one actually based on 8 1/2, does.

Mr Blue Sky by ELO reminds me of every stupid comedy that’s been released in the past 5 years.

In the liner notes of Rob Dougan’s album Furious Angels, he credits Bo Goldman’s script for Scent of a Woman as to having inspired this song.

@ MALICK

Oh yes, I remember seeing your list a while ago, and to be honest I think it’s what gave me the idea to make this thread. So, thanks!

I cannot hear “Loco de Amor” (David Byrne) or anything by The Feelies without thinking of Demme’s SOMETHING WILD.

Speaking of wild things, “Wild Thing” always makes me think of MAJOR LEAGUE. (Come to think of it, that song is in SOMETHING WILD, too.)

Kenji – I was about to post Amoreena. that song fit the intro so well

the ending to the Moody Blues’ “Nights In White Satin” with the strings & the poem, has always reminded me of old Disney cartoon scores. like Cinderella
and I cannot watch “Seventh Seal” without thinking of this song :
