Speed Racer

I really liked this movie. I thought it was inventive, original, and it really stuck with me. Especially the final scene, which is cheesy but really emotional, I thought.

Anyway, I’ve had some conversations about this movie, about the acting and the plot and the aforementioned “cheese”, but I was just wondering what you guys thought?

I love Speed Racer too

I think Speed Racer is also a great film and top 10 finest popcorn films of this decade and is probably in my top 10 of last year since after repeat viewings, the film actually improved for me.

I really dig it. Visually innovative and looks soooo good on Blu-ray.
Props to you for having the courage to start a thread of it!

Can I join the fan club? Speed Racer ruled in so many ways; I’m not sure if it was ahead of it’s time or will always be weird, unique, & mostly disliked.

I try to go into a movie optimistic, but i seriously hated it.

I loved it, I thought it would be a lame kid’s movie and it turns out it’s trippy as fuck and fulfills any and all cool fantasies I had as a kid, not to mention a great adult-themed plot about corruption and greed. I loved it, I think it is a one of a kind film that many more will appreciate down the line. This is one that I expect will be shown at midnight screenings in 10 years.

I saw the trailer and my eyes hurt for hours…

Reflecting on the film, it is a good movie bookended by two GREAT scenes. I feel the same way about The Matrix Reloaded was a lackluster sci-fi picture surrounding three or four ASTONISHING scenes. The Watchowski brothers (I still call them brothers) in my view seem incapable of making an uninteresting product, whether that be movies, comic books or screenplays. (though the video games they’ve made are pretty bad)

Loved it from start to finish.

I wasn’t expecting much, and the movie really surprised me I liked it a lot. I find there are many polarizing reactions to this film for some reason people either like it and love the style or they find it to bright and loud etc etc.

Hated it in theaters, walked out. Only other film I walked out on was the good sheapard.

Saw it a few months after on Blu ray and actually thought it wasn’t half bad. Definitely not a great movie though, in my book, just decent.

No doubt it’s eye candy though.

This film I find far more interesting in terms of its style than the story/characters/etc. It’s the closest to a filmed cartoon with human characters since Gremlins 2 and I think such a bold stylistic choice deserves some accolades if only for trying something different. The Wachowskis seem to enjoy testing the mainstream with their aesthetics, can’t say I’ve been a fan of theirs but I am interested to see where they go next.

Obviously, visually this film kicks ass. I don’t know how people expected the race scenes to be filmed in any other way but CG. Emile was caught complaining about how he never got to drive a car for the movie. Shut the hell up and follow directions. This movie is intended for kids, and I think they would have a lot of fun with it. I liked the monkey, I liked the little brother a lot (the kid has genius gestures). The last scene, if you make it to the end of the film, makes the whole ride worth it. The only problem with the movie is that it depends too much on the last climactic scene, but I guess it works in that its just like the last lap of a race, the most interesting and the most memorable.

Have you ever seen the original Cartoon? Real races. not a hot wheels track. I had expected film makers that claim to like the show to be respectful of it and its fans. Not create a bubble gum world.

Wouldn’t that have been incredibly boring though? If the movie had just been “real races” it would have bored me to tears, guess I’ll stay away from the cartoon…

What I learned from Speed Racer: Christina Ricci has the same beautiful neck line as Louise Brooks. That is all.

I liked Khoi Vinh’s take from a designer’s perspective.

The show had spy stuff and if the film was more that and less of the stupid races it would have been cool(to me).

Roger Ebert says that it’s not what a movies about, but how it’s about it. This is a case of form over function. Speed Racer is one grand mess of a movie. It’s hyper active and boring all at the same time, maybe the worst sin of all though is it’s sense of humor which is just plain lame. It’s also long, real long. It’s clearly aimed at children though, and as such it acts as a good moral tale. Family ethics, corporate greed, passion of the will. And with all the stories floating around about one of the Wachowski’s getting a sex change towards the end of the movie there’s some really odd themes about identity and the manipulation of the human form which are very much in line with the Matrix movies but seemed a bit weird in Speed Racer. All that being said it looks really fucking cool and in ten years this will have a real strong cult following and no one will care about Iron Man. It’s overblown and there’s too much fat, but that’s the point. It’s hyper creative for the sake of it. For whatever reason it can play in the background and act as the perfect white noise that lets my mind think indirectly from it, not with it. It redefined the blockbuster in form, and that’s function enough.

I hated that movie. It almost gave me a seizure.

I genuinely enjoyed Speed Racer. Its story didn’t have to be absolutely great to make you want to see what kind of crazy roller-coaster light-show mash-up you were in store for next. And the ending of the last race, to me, played out like an extended “money shot,” if y’all get my drift.

So many pretty colors!

And seizured-up Michael: That was the POINT of the movie!

I didn’t think I’d like this film until I saw it in HD. I ultimately enjoyed the film on its own merits, but man, what eye/ brain candy.

The last scene is stunning. On a whole, I wouldn’t say it’s a great movie, but the ending blew my brains (and eyes) out. In a good way. It makes the whole film worth it.

Speed Racer is awesome, hands down one to the best adaptations ever. Even a better adaptation than V for Vandetta. This movie honors the visual structure of anime in such beautiful way. I’m glad to see that there are people out there who understood Speed Racer.
