Someone told me today that there are certain opinions (when it comes to liking or disliking a film) that are just right or wrong (part of me really agrees with this statement). The film we were discussing was Blow, and apparently me not liking it is not a valid opinion.
Speaking of which in my report for my film class, I wrecked this movie. I’m curious to see how my film teacher handles negative feedback.
People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.
-Abe Lincoln, apparently on a book he didn’t care for.
If that teacher’s not a total dickweed, I can’t see how you not liking Blow should be a huge issue. If I can guess, do you call it a poor man’s GoodFellas? Did they tell you you were somehow wrong in disliking it?
I don’t mind the “classic rock & crime” genre; Blow would be a lesser entry. Did you find it utterly worthless? I’d defend somne of the performances.
I’d defend some of the performances also, however I don’t think they had very good characters to work with.
I think its lack of originality (GoodFellas being the obvious one) is a problem, mainly because it fails at even coming close to what its copying so all I’m thinking about is how great the other movie is, and how mediocre this one is. If it was mediocre and original I would give it a bit more slack.
I also felt that it managed to be over sentimental at times, which just pissed me off. He was a drug dealer, not a saint. Stop adding in touching scenes (poorly written “touching” scenes, I should say)! But over sentimental is only annoyingly over sentimental when the scenes just do not work, and I didn’t feel like they did.
I also don’t like being told that my opinion is wrong, when I know that this is not a great film. And I don’t think anyone who knew anything would argue that its one of those untouchable masterpieces.
Someone’s making an “untouchable masterpiece” case for it? Who? Ted Demme’s ghost?
Defense two; the Pablo Escobar stuff is fascinating. Most people should know more about the cartels, to better understand Central & South America, and to know coke just doesn’t appear in a baggie the dealer gives you, but from a much bigger, scarier, & stranger industry than rap albums or “war on drugs” propaganda would have you think.
Nope, a dumbshit 16 year old who wears tight jeans and fohawks his hair.
No offense to your defense but that is only like two scenes so….
None taken, it’s a pretty weak defense.
It sounds like your Gabe Saportian foil is wrong here, but more in his insistance that you are. Why did Blow rate a film class spot anyway? What was the point?
If I tell you, you’ll laugh your ass off.
He showed it because he thinks that it shows the dangers of drug abuse!
You’re right. I did.
I’m damned if I know what to say about that.
I don’t have to argue about Blow with a suspect film teacher & Pete Wentz tomorrow (or today at this point,) but I’m going to bed anyway. Good luck?
S. is gettin’ upset!

Drew: He should have shown the brilliant Blowup instead, which can be about drug abuse too. Like erm.. the mimes are druggies. Right.
AHHHHH nothing better than receiving a good 3 hours sleep! (grumble ruguihgberfclw)
Who’s rooting for Japan in the AWC? I know I am.
Doctor’s sick notes are glorious for they’re free passes to sleep in, skip school, and watch as much film as you want for a couple of days. (depending on the ailment)
Nice, Christi2n! Sounds too cool! Haha!

HEY GUYS! I just watched Solaris!!! I absolutely loved it! There were large bits of it that I didn’t understand completely, but that just made it even greater!!! It is now one of my all time favorite films!!!!!
Not knowing everything can indeed enhance the power of a film. The reason I think 2001: A Space Odyssey is great is because we are not given all the answers, much to the dismay of some. Wouldn’t life be boring if we knew all the answers? I have yet to see Solaris but reading about people comparing it to 2001: A Space Odyssey makes me want to see it even more.
Ben: It can be compared to 2001 in a way, because from one angle, they are much alike. But really, from a different angle, they are two completely polar opposites. But, I absolutely love them both, and I’m sure you will also.
Ahoy-hoy!
Hello, S., sorry I didn’t notice that you were on until just now!!
Savvy
Zachary: Drew’s right, you apologize too much. :D
Erg!!! Well, I guess I do. Sorry about that. ;)
What’s up?
Savvy
Zachary: Well, today I overslept and wasn’t able to get ready in time for my Psych. class, but “luckily” I didn’t miss French! ]:\
How about you?
French. I should probably learn that language sometime soon…
I’m doing all right. I slept until about 11:30, and then I got up and I found out (after pouring my bowl of cereal, of course), that I was out of milk, so I got pissed and heated up some waffles instead. And then management came to inspect our apartment. Here’s hoping that everything looked cleanly enough!
Savvy
Zachary: I probably won’t remember any of it after some time.
You could’ve just eaten the cereal dry, like a MAN!
Good luck with the inspection! Also, I got a message from my friend saying she might be able to see A Serious Man this weekend.
S., well, yeah, but I still am able to retain some German, even if I haven’t been learning it in three years, so it’s not too bad…
Cereal dry is for people with intense strength, which, if you see me, you’ll notice that I do not have. Plus, milk just makes me happy. :D
Yeah, they inspected the apartment, you know, crazy quickly (thy have a lot to get to), but if they noticed anything that looks awful they’re going to fine us…erg…
Hey, good luck with A Serious Man! Not only is it a great (though insane!) film, but you’ll be seeing it with someone who actually means something to you! Bravo! Good luck!

I hate physics. Anyone with me?
Retinch, rooting for Japan- music to my ears! Very sensible person
Fandorin, who’s NOT with you?
That why I took Chemistry, which I also hated…hrmmm…
Savvy
I hated chemistry more… Choosing between those two was one of the toughest decisions life has to offer ;)
Seen any great films lately?
ricky richtoffen
Christia2n- I can’t believe the Bengals are finally for real. The Chad Ochocinco show is probably one of the most entertaining things in the NFL now. Palmer’s panning out well too. Are you (like JR) Texican, or just raised in a Cowboys household?
