STOP THE LISTS!

Fitzcarraldo

Conor, I think that Americans, at least, and Western Europeans, have an innate desire to quantify everything immediately. What’s the best, what’s the worst, is it a comedy, a drama, etc, because if things are unquantifiable, we don’t know how to respond to them. Just because a lot of cultures didn’t have a written alphabet didn’t make them less intelligent, less communicative, or their spoken language less complex. It’s just less quantified. I imagine it gives us an illusion of structure to be able to things into lists, into categories, into our control. It’s definitely interesting, but probably undefinable. The really interesting thing is that as I’m thinking about this, I realize that I’m trying to categorize the state of being unclassifiable.

I think I might have just blown my mind hole.

Funniest thing said on this thread as of now:

“I think I might have just blown my mind hole.”

One of rare things you laugh at every time you see it.

Anybody else notice that The Auteurs spell checker always puts a red underline on the word “Auteurs”?

Films I’m planning to catch at the LA Film Fest:

1) Crude Oil Part 1 (it’s great that they’re showing Wang Bing’s 14 hour documentary, but why only the first 7 hours? Where is part 2? Well, I can’t really complain, it’s a free screening!)
2) 35 Shots of Rhum (Claire Denis paying homage to Ozu, need I say more?)
3) Los Bastardos (I’m interested to see this because Amat Escalante is Reygadas’ protege, and it’s about people I encounter every day: day laborers)
4) Still Walking (This will be my first Kore-eda film, he’s just one of those filmmakers I never took the opportunity to see, even when After Life was showing on this site for free)
5) Musica Nocturna (There’s always interesting films coming from Argentina, and I always enjoy films that programmed in “Films That Got Away”)

Favourite Kore-eda films

1. Maborosi (by far)
2. After Life
3. Nobody Knows
4. Hana (barely worth mention)

Oh, how lucky you are to be able to see both 35 Shots, and Still Walking… Makin’ me jealous.

Well, both 35 Shots of Rhum and Still Walking were able to get distribution deals so they should be coming to an art house near you…

That was probably another reason why I put off watching Kore-eda for awhile, because I wanted to watch Maborosi first. Maybe I should check if they have a copy at the lib…

Wait…it seems like this isn’t even a discussion about lists anymore. Anyway, if you don’t like lists, just don’t add your list to the thread.

This thread is so cool, that I just couldn’t resist posting a list:

Why I make lists:

1. To replicate my choices so that they aren’t duplicated.
2. To tick-off those who don’t like lists – very much fun.
3. To try to remember what I am now forgetting.
4. Because I am bored as hell.
5. Lists fill up the void on a blank piece of paper or screen.

Saying all that, I am now reporting this thread to the autuers authorities for too much silliness

The auteurs has now issues a ‘Cease & Desist’ order for this thread:

You have been told and will now act accordingly

Those not complying will be kicked off the auteurs

Favorite vegetarian sammich:

Roasted garlic bread (the garlic is roasted, not the bread), ranch spread, havarti cheese, whole leaf lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, red onions, and chopped olive mix.

I get it from VONS (a Safeway company).

Did I tell you guys about how I saw Ron Jeremy last week? He rolled his eyes at me and mumbled something under his breath. I think he thought I was checkin’ him out. Just thinking about it’s giving me the chills.

The bad kind.

To paraphrase (blatantly steal from) Tom Lehrer: It’s sobering to think when John Keats was my age, he’d already been dead five years.

So strange… I fell asleep to a Sublime song this afternoon (Caress Me Down) which references Ron Jeremy, and he appeared in my dream. Nothing weird happened—well, nothing sexual, anyway.

SOYBEAN

I heard somewhere that Ron Jeremy is a big Godard fan.

Jay Leighty

I saw a reference to Ron Jeremy today, incidentally. He was allegedly in a crowd scene in Ghostbusters. Is there anyone that doesn’t love Ghostbusters?

Samantha

I believe it.

SOYBEAN

Was he that great big marsmellowy thing?

House of Leaves

So in that sentence, does ‘big’ modify ‘Ron Jeremy’ or ‘Godard fan’?
