Law: Oh, I’ve just been asking for StL!ers to list their top favorite directors [doesn’t have to be ten necessarily] and see which ones are mentioned the most. :)
@Grey Daisies: It’s true, prices have gone down. In Europe feature lengths are now 4€ in place of 5€.

All: I tried to update my March 2010 list yesterday by adding both She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Letter from an Unknown Woman, but it wouldn’t let me. Would anyone know why that is?
What exactly happened when you tried? Because I had a similar problem last month.
Crobley: I can’t remember the message verbatim, but it said something about ‘stack overflow’ I think.
It’s odd, because I had no problem when I made two new lists yesterday.
Josh S. try to go to the individual film profile and click on which list to add it to. I had a similar problem with my female-directors list and they recently fixed it.
Allison: Thanks, I’ll try that. :) Hopefully this is just a minor gaff.
EDIT: Yep, that did it.
Good to hear that it worked, Josh S. The frustrating thing for me was trying to edit the text when the “list” wasn’t working.
Allison: You couldn’t edit the text? That’s strange. I had no trouble with that despite not being able to add the films.
Josh s, weird, it seems that this glitch you have is similar but different. At least you were able to add the films in a different way, by going to the profile.
Allison: Yes, that’s true. I’m really surprised how few problems there’ve been on this site [trolls excluded, of course].
ACHTUNG!
Unfortunately I made another slight oversight in the poll last night, so I will correct that now. Also, any other ‘undecided’ stoppers out there, feel free to contribute your entries whenever you like. Thank you and good day. :P
EDIT:

Good work, JO_osh!
Only there’s no way Woody belongs up there. But, it’s interesting to see where we all fit in.
I’d like to extend my list from 10 to 15 by adding the following:
Abbas Kiarostami
Michael Haneke
Krzysztof Kieślowski
David Cronenberg
Alfred Hitchcock
J.R.: ‘JO_osh!’ D’oh! Anyways, there are still quite a few participants M.I.A. though.
I thought you said you hadn’t seen that much Allen? ;)
Rumplesink: I just hope you’re not tryin’ to pad the votes. :D
Shall I just tack it on to the end of your list?
I’ve seen:
Manhattan
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Annie Hall
Mighty Aphrodite
Celebrity
Match Point
Vicki Christina Barcelona
Curse of the Jade Scorpion
I think that’s it. He’s great, and obviously a populist (which is why he’s up there), but he ain’t no Bergman or Tarkovsky.
Well, here’s my whole top 15:
Ingmar Bergman
Andrei Tarkovsky
Akira Kurosawa
Stanley Kubrick
Aki Kaurismaki
The Coen Brothers
Woody Allen
Martin Scorsese
David Lynch
Jean Pierre Melville
Abbas Kiarostami
Michael Haneke
Krzysztof Kieślowski
David Cronenberg
Alfred Hitchcock
J.R.: Well, I can’t speak for Tarkovsky, yet, but I think he equals Bergman.
[ducks for fear of cabbages]
Rumplesink: I see, I’ve kept everyone’s lists just to keep track of things……..not that that’s creepy or anything.
Which Bergmans have you seen?
Actually JR, I don’t want to start a pie fight here or anything, but I’d say he belongs up there with the big boys – maybe not strictly from a cinematic point of view, but as far as exploring the big issues in life (albeit in a more light-hearted way most of the time than the likes of Bergman).
J.R.:
Wild Strawberries
Scenes from a Marriage: Mini-series
Cries and Whispers
Through a Glass Darkly-——————
Fanny and Alexander: Theatrical
Autumn Sonata
I should be finishing the F&A series tonight and Persona sometime in the next few weeks.
EDIT: Bergman is just sort of coming on the ‘rebound’ for me. ;) Until I’d finished the Scenes series I hadn’t watched anything of his for awhile and I was sort of waffling on how much I liked his work. Allen though has been extremely enjoyable for me, and not just on an entertaining level. He may be a populist director, but I find him an excellent one from what I have seen thus far.
As a person who has seen every Tarkovsky and most Bergman, I think Bergman is the best only because of his output. Bergman has 40 something films compared to Tarkovsky who only has 7. I think Tarkovsky is the best only considering quality.
Well, S, you’ve seen more Bergman than I have, so maybe I’m the ahole (;), but based on Wild Strawberries and Persona (though I’ve also seen Through a Glass… and Seventh Seal) I’d put him in a different league.
Robley that is kind of lame, considering Tarkovsky died when he was in his fifties because of cancer. Bergman died when he was in his nineties. Bergman had 40 additional years to create cinema. I like Bergman better too, but that is a lame thing to say.
Yeah. You lame-o.
Josh R. sorry that sounded a little tough of me to say that. But to clarify Robley is not lame, what he said was.
