1900 is definitely not one of my favorite films.

^ PFFFFFFFT.

Did you watch it in English? People are always complaining about the dub.

Bertolucci intended for the film to be in Italian……..de Niro even spoke Italian for the film!

Tommy

Seen both versions. Best Bertolucci for me is either Spiders Strategem or Last Tango.

I haven’t seen a copy of Spider’s Stratagem that doesn’t look as if it was dragged through a machine and scratched maliciously.

I’m waiting for a proper release of The Conformist so I can finally watch it.

“To me that suggests the parasite may trigger schizophrenia in genetically susceptible people.

I liked The Conformist.

If you knew everything that went on in your body you would go crazy anyway.

So relax, and live already.

The copy of spiders Strategem I saw wasn’t bad. It looked pretty good actually. The Conformist is quite good. Need to rewatch that one. Before the Revolution I another that I liked a lot. La Luna is probably the weakest of his along with Stealing Beauty.

See La Commare Secca too. That is the earliest Bertolucci. It’s excellent.

Tommy

i’ve noticed that a lot of people can’t get into last tango. I loved it the very first time I watched it.

Ben.

I’ll need to re-watch Last Tango at some point.

In the Realm of the Senses is better.

I liked the general idea in Il Conformista of the people who went along with the fascists then railed against the fascists the second they were out of power. But there are a few things that turn me off to it. I don’t think the whole Plato’s Cave analogy is pertains very much to the situation, and if it does, it does so in a reductionist way. Also in all Bertolucci films I find the dubbing especially bad. The first time I watched it I paused it and went to IMDB just to make sure Italian was the original language, the seams were so blatant.

I’m not against dubbing, but they should at least try to make the sounds match the lip movement.

I liked Last Tango.

I feel like much of earlier Italian cinema had been plagued by bad dubbing. It’s not a Bertolucci thing.

that’s true ^ they would cast international stars that all spoke different languages. trintignant and dominique sanda were french of course. it takes some getting used to

i can never see trintignant without thinking of his character in that film. thus i despise him lol

Tommy

and a lot of the mis-synchronization occurs in post recording (ADR). It’s not always going to synch perfectly when an actor says a line one way during a take and you have to go back another day to say that same line again in a studio.

love Trinntignant in My Night at Mauds

yeah, throughout maud’s i was thinking, here’s this fool again. i was glad when things went badly for him LOL. not his fault of course. he was certainly great in the film, and well-cast

i’m just thinking i’ve had spider’s stratagem on my hard drive for like a year now. forgotten all about it

Tommy

ohh you better watch it. it’s so good.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated The Dreamers, but I guess I should give Bertolucci another chance, huh?

Also, I think I’m gonna restart hulu plus tomorrow… I watched Yojimbo the other night, and it made me realize that I need to watch more samurai films… and hulu has pretty much all of criterion’s samurai films and more.

And I used to think I didn’t like samurai films!!

BAH! How’d you know that was first on my list????

It has one of the most insane endings I’ve ever seen. Be sure to check it out.

Also, Oshima had a heart it seems, regardless of how much he tried to hide it. Diary of of a Yunbogi Boy is devastating. Isn’t it just appalling that people cannot afford clothes for their children and they have to walk around naked. Oh, it’s dreadful………

Tommy

Haven’t seen it in a while and it’s not as great as a lot of classic samurai films, but it is pretty fun. And there are a few things that QT took and used for the Kill Bill films.

Daibosatsu Toge

Tomu Uchida should be at least as famous as any other stylist samurai master.

If you’re a fan of Samurai cinema one must recommend Uchida’s Bloody Spear at Mt. Fuji, also. Probably third, for me, behind only Seven Samurai and Harakiri.
