i just saw that mubi users thread. i’m sure people have lovely intentions, but….i don’t like those threads. mubi is not a popularity contest (or a dating site, for that matter) plus my admiration for people pops and crackles in ardent little bursts that i can’t keep track of, and averaging out the fire just to shout about it seems like some kind of quenching….
also, apparently no one understands me! but i do wish hank the tank ♥ would post more though.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing for people to have a love fest here once in a while. It’s better than shitting on one another.
It’s better than shitting on one another.
I want to post a picture of the Bishop from Salo looking puzzled and adding the caption “oh really?” but I’m too afraid to google-image search that at work. So use your imaginations!
And Odi – I don’t so much feel sorry for Vanselow as I am intrigued and puzzled by him. I have to admit that I really love reading long rants and internet fights. and there just haven’t been enough of those since the name change!
DFFOO it is one thing to read them and another to be the target of one. Keep that in mind.
Well, David Ehrenstein once told me that I have no taste, but that’s pretty much the extent of it…
And I did make Vanselow mad once, but I pretty much started that one. He made a sub-par pun of my name… I think it was just “Drunken Idiot of Old” or something… disappointing…
Ehrenstein is a real winner too.
Aside:
ICH LIEBE DIE KUNST DER FUGE. [Hmm, everything does sound harsher in German.]
Well DFFOO let’s just say that Ehrenstein is a normal person, and being told you have “no taste” is not in the same league as someone telling you that they’d like to whip you. And not because they have a sexual fantasy about you.
If Vanselow talked to your fiancee the way that he talked to me, you wouldn’t be feeling amused.
Oh no, forum discussions have crossed! Now, just waiting for the Puft Marshmallow Man…
Ugh – I just listened to that piece, and it’s nice and all, but the problem I have with listening to Bach is that I can’t stop thinking “why am I not just listening to Beethoven?” Beethoven’s fugues are just so much more involving and expressive to me, while Bach’s just seem kind of dry and academic.
I really want to like Bach, but I would rather just be listening to this:
or the fugue starting at 11:10 in this video:
I just can’t get enough of the urgency of Beethoven’s fugues, so Bach, and even Mozart, just doesn’t cut it for me! Still, I really want to get into Bach, so I’m thinking about downloading this instead of just listening to random pieces on youtube occasionally. Can you say anything about that collection? And while we’re at it, can anyone say anything about this one for Mozart?
Odilon: Not to mention Ehrenstein says that to pretty much everyone at some point.
DFFO: I don’t find Bach dry or academic and actually wasn’t that keen on his music for awhile [however, I’ve always had trouble getting into Baroque.] While I don’t dislike his music, Beethoven hasn’t really done anything for me.
Beethoven hasn’t really done anything for me.
Heresy! I just can’t even get myself to even imagine that viewpoint!!
Of course, unless you’re John Cage saying “Beethoven was wrong!” Cause that led to a lot of cool stuff…
Never said Beethoven isn’t great to listen to, just haven’t gotten hooked.
^ Fair enough, but that’s still heretical in my book! :P
Can you recommend me anything of Bach’s that might get me hooked?
Bach! Bach! Bach!
Somebody give me something that’ll hook me on Bach!
Somebody give me something that’ll hook me on Bach!
i have just the thing
HahaHAAAA – I added that to my “want to watch” list just yesterday! Do you think it’s a good intro to Bach? As opposed to porn for people who already love him?
Silence Before Bach is great. The only good Portabella I’ve seen so far.
well…you get more music in the straub/huillet film….but in portabella’s you get a naked lady, so whatever paves the way for you….the silence before bach is more ‘bach in the world’ than ‘the world of bach’, so perhaps it’s easier to get sucked in that way….and that predule from suite no. 1 on the subway……if you don’t like that, then bach is never going to be for you…..it’s gorgeous…..
I’m interested in both of those films, hopefully the Straub-Huillet will be released from ‘short wait’ soon. As far as recommendations, I’d just say patience. Took me awhile before I appreciated Bach but perhaps it helped that I enjoy the sound of a harpsichord.
“mubi is not a popularity contest (or a dating site, for that matter)”

“Not to mention Ehrenstein says that to pretty much everyone at some point.”
Ehrenstein and Spence are the absolute best at lovingly, caringly, carefully, and patiently explaining to you why you’re an intellectual and emotional child if you like movies for the lulz sometimes. I love those guys.

Those memes are so weird. ^That one is like a crying potato.
ehrenstein called me out once cuz i said i would probably never watch salò. apparently i’m not a serious cinephile. fair enough
Well he is a critic so if he didn’t see it, it wouldn’t look too good, right? Wasn’t there a whole discussion about some critics who don’t want to see it somewhere here?…
yes that was the one ^ but since it’s not my profession i will just watch what i like xD. i think this would soon cease to be fun if i was getting paid for it LOL

So I guess Henri would be a meowme.
I have Salo in my ‘flix queue, Ruby. So I’ll be brave and watch it for the both of us.
