“I don’t think my posts are overly political, dickish, or trollish, but not everyone shares my sense of humor (which is dark and dry) and I’ve heard of some candidates being tossed aside because of the posts of their friends.”

That would have to be the posts of their friends on their wall, though, since otherwise the employers would have to go through some of their friends or at least a cross-section. Literally not worth the time if it’s going to take longer than reading the front page of a resume. So whereas I am concerned about how I come across online and especially in social networks, again the basics of policing wall posts and stuff will take you a long way. I think it more has to do with just checking long enough to see that the person keeps up a professional appearance. My posts aren’t all about movies and filmmaking but the worst you can say about them is that I throw in an expletive every dozen or so, and nobody’s shared really awful crap on my wall.

Edit: by the way I’m not like, trying to get you to turn your profile back on or anything like that, or defending Facebook. I just know a few people who’ve done the ol’ Facebook check and to them it really is just a quick common sense check: “Well DB seems to talk about movies and job hunting and occasionally post on a friend’s political rant with a link to an article or something. Whereas Contestant 2 is practically showing us her titties and looks drunk all the time and has update after update about how her friends need to stop being such quote ‘haters’ about her awesome and unique lifestyle.”

DiB—These are Fortune 500 companies, and I’m not betting my immediate future on what their HR depts. may or may not have in mind regarding social media. In any case, anecdotal evidence is enough for me.

Of course, I’ll turn it back on once I’m hired ;)

Well Magpies leaving is pretty fucked-up, but there’s certainly reason I suppose:

although, i think it is an ironic gesture, mimicking internet suicide to show how pathetic our hysteria about such cases really is. come on, mags always was an expert in magistral, ice-cold sarcasm.
i hope i am right. :D . this place would be so unimaginative without her. eugene green lost a passionate fan. but will regain her soon :P

Mubi just isn’t Mubi without Magpies and Odi.

I don’t know why, but the site is starting to feel very isolated and unwelcoming.

If ‘Mubi’ was a physical space, it would be a huge futuristic hotel, full of cold plastic furnishings and dull metallic surfaces, where no one ever left their rooms. Instead, they’d sit square-eyed in front of a bank of large computer monitors – plugged into them! – repeating the same arguments and discussions into thin air like a dictation from the electronic Gods; no longer interested in how comprehensible their collective mantra is to “the world outside.”

Of course, this probably says more about my personal state of mind than it does about the state of the site, but still… if not a futuristic hotel, then some overcrowded “port of call” where vagabonds and ruffians attempt to sell their wares; rubbing shoulders momentarily, but rarely leaving an impression.

Hey House you know my FB should I be worried about my profile while job hunting?

I emailed magpies just to see how she is doing. She thought it was sweet for asking. She seemed in decent spirits and said she was doing well. She said she was genuinely sorry if she alarmed anyone. I didn’t pry to ask her reasons for leaving because I’m sure she would have gave them if she wanted to. It’s just good to know she is ok. We can only hope she’ll be back some day.

Brian—Yeah. Thing is, better safe than sorry, and it’s not like Mubi—when you deactivate your fb everything is stored and you just reactivate it after you’re hired. Everything comes back just like you never left.

But I think you should deactivate your account anyway because you’re incredibly annoying and I hate you.

JK, for those that don’t know.

Lawrence of Arabia restored and on blu soon. I’ve seen it in 70MM which is probably as great as I’ll ever see it—I literally felt like I was walking through the Nefu at one point—but I’ll be glad to have it on blu, and hopefully there are some new extras to pour over.

• the 4K restoration starts playing in digital theaters on 4 October

• the 3-disc Blu-ray set arrives on 13 November

• it screens for one night only on Turner Classic Movies at 8pm on 16 November
