I prefer Ryan’s Daughter to Lawrence. But they’re both great films. Need to rewatch Lawrence.
I’ve stood on the beach where part of that film was shot, but I’ve never seen it.
You may dig it. Mitchum is great. I need to watch that one again to just because it’s so amazing.
I need to see a lot more from him, but thanks for the rec. I’ll let you know what I think when I do see it.
So does that mean you’ll hire me as your personal movie recommender? :-p
Yes, and I will pay you in samollians.
Some stupid people saying some very stupid things.
So… does anybody love Destroyer as much as I’ve been loving him lately?
I used to never really be able to get into him, but then really slowly over the past year I’ve been starting to reeeeally love almost all of his albums.
Destroyer Albums, ranked:
1. Destroyer’s Rubies
2. Streethawk: A Seduction
3. Kaputt
4. Your Blues
5. Trouble in Dreams
I haven’t really been able to get into This Night or We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge, and I haven’t heard City of Daughters or Thief, though…
OMFG Jandek is playing in Athens, GA next weekend.
JANDEK IS PLAYING IN ATHENS, GA NEXT WEEKEND!
MOTHER FUCKING JANDEK IS PLAYING IN ATHENS!!!!!!!!!!!
Srsly – holy fucking shit!!
too bad, dffoo. I bought all the tickets. muhahahahahahah.
@dffoo: This is the first time I’ve heard of the term “outsider music”. Now I’m interested.
Haha I’d be so mad, Bijoux!
Also, I guess I should say it’s just a representative from Corwood playing in Athens on Saturday… it may or may not be Jandek himself. ;)
Dude – Jandek is pretty great! You should check him out… I don’t really listen to any other “outsider music” though… although I think it’s debatable whether or not Jandek fits into that category.
One more before I’m outtie, Breaking Bad as a Kickstarter campaign:

I don’t really listen to any other “outsider music” though… although I think it’s debatable whether or not Jandek fits into that category.
i’m not really crazy about the term ‘outsider music’… but jandek was one of the features in irwin chusid’s (the guy who coined the term) book, ‘songs in the key of z’. i read it when it came out, mainly cuz i was a fan of the musicians it covered, joe meek, captain beefheart, the shaggs, lucia pamela, jandek, daniel johnston, legendary stardust cowboy, tiny tim, etc.
in my opinion though, there is no ‘outsider art’, or ‘outsider music’… just art, just music.
thats awesome though dffoo! let me know how the jandek show is!
I am showing Night at the Museum at work and the pure laughter, joy and delight these kids have in response to the film is making this one of the best movie watching experiences I have ever had :)
Thanks for the videos, Chromeheart! Yeah, I’ll let you know how it is.
Bijoux – yeah, I watched that with my mom once and her cracking up made it really fun for me too! That and Home Alone 2!
I like Destroyer’s Rubies. His other stuff is pretty decent but also sameish.
I think Dan Bejar’s more effective in his songs on New Pornographers albums. Jackie, Ballad of the Comeback Kid, etc.
sameish??
I mean, he definitely has a recognizable style (la las and doo doos most notably), but I feel like he always approaches it from different and interesting angles. Your Blues is really different from Streethawk, and both of those are really different from Kaputt, while still recognizably Destroyer.
I like his New Pornographers songs a lot, too, though.
Have you ever listened to Swan Lake, Jirin?
i actually liked this night when it came out, haven’t listened in a while, but i remember it sounding like hunky dory-era bowie, and marc bolan-ish. kaputt is my favorite, though i haven’t heard all of his albums.
his lyrics can be a bit too much for me at times…
one of my favorite bejar new pornos songs:
Brief Encounter is where it’s at. So happy to finally own that film. In a gorgeous Criterion set to boot.

“The seven most meditative and elegiac superhero movies ever made.”
1) Stalker
2) 3-Iron
3) Drive
4) Unbreakable
5) Donnie Darko

House of Leaves
I haven’t seen enough Lean to be a fanboy but I do love that movie. It was my favorite movie for some time.
