Thanks, Brentos! It was 8/8, but I never consider it to be tomorrow until I wake up.
And it was dandy—I saw three 5/5 films in the cinema today. Such a great day.
House, I’ll start a thread for you for your birthday (and not even a troll thread): You Can’t Fix Crazy: Antichrist vs Possession
I like it.
Hey, Happy Birthday, House! I loved Moonrise Kingdom, too, and definitely will watch those two other films you saw when I get the chance. Great way to celebrate a birthday with some fine films.
I’m definitely up for the Possession/Antichrist discussion, Uli. Both films are intentionally over-the-top and separate the true cinephiles from the hangers-on.
Hey, thanks, Oxy! I enjoyed your thoughts on the Moonrise thread and would love to hear what you think of the others when you see them.
Oh look! A new thread!
900 ratings! Hooray for me…

Aside: So, I’m going through a bargain bin earlier today and find . . . . A Tale of Springtime?
“I know I’m 15 hours behind now, but I have seen The Sheltering Sky. It’s a decent movie and fun to compare with the book. It doesn’t quite capture the weird horror of the novel, though.”
i’m 23+15 hours behind now, but man, the one thing totally tripping me up is that i’m no longer able to envision john malkovich as being younger than, like, 50, maybe 51. and yeah, the ‘Sky’ section of the novel, i’m just like “jesus how do you film that with a whole rest of the movie to deal with too”

stoked!
APB to anyone who has seen Mysteries of Lisbon!
I have two questions for you.
1. I have never seen a Raul Ruiz movie. Is this a good place to start? There’s a copy at my video store and I thought about trying it out. Then I noticed the 4 1/2 hour run time and decided that I’d better check with the Mubians to see if there isn’t a better, perhaps less time-consuming way to dip my toes in.
2. If Mysteries is a good place to start, can someone give me a rough idea of what type of experience I should expect. How is the film paced? Is it narrative based? I’d just want to know what I’m getting into mood-wise before I carve out a huge chunk of time to watch it.
Yes, it’s narrative based. Pretty accessible, so I would think it would be a fine intro. I started with Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting, I think. In any case, you’re about to discover one of the world’s great artists. Happy for you, man.
Thanks, HoL. My movie schedule is booked through Saturday night, but there’s an off chance I could squeeze it on on Sunday. Or, if my mood dictates, I still need to see Che and Carlos.
I gotta go to bed now, but if anyone else has a thought on Mysteries, please share.
Che was pretty good, but I wasn’t as enthralled by Carlos as everyone else. Still worth watching.

I actually rented Mysteries awhile back, but as you mentioned the runtime made it hard to find a good moment to watch it. Wish they released the, longer, mini-series version. Presumably that would be easier to fit into one’s schedule.
Hope to see it sometime soon, or at least get into more of his work, period.
Tommy: You son of a beach . . .
I re-watched Bigger than Life the other day, and, man, it’s great!!

Haha, black irish. I hope I can go. Need to check the availabilty of tickets.
MYSTERIES OF LISBON could be good choice to watch, anyone. I haven’t seen it yet but will look it up after I post this comment.
Wait. I already have it on my “to-watchlist”. (haha to myself)
Tommy: Well, good luck then in any case.
@Tommy
Hope so, too. Please enjoy and let us know. ;)
Well if the Swanberg doesn’t work out, l’ll be dammed if I miss Herzog in September. I will kill a man if I have to.
‘I will kill a man if I have to.’
That would actually be extremely appropriate, from what I know of the man.
Johnsonisjohnson has gone! Is someone killings MUBI users? First Odi, then Magpies. Soon I won’t have any followers left! :(
That’s who it is. I should always check here first before I go through my follow list on my own. I’ll follow you, LID :)
