HAVE YOU SEEN KWAIDAN?
A saw Sukiyaki Western Django by coincidence right after I had seen Kwaidan and lo and behold, both movie tell the same story of the Heike Clan VS Genji Clan.
@Berjuan I saw that awhile ago, interesting, I remember the story of Hoichi the Earless, with the blind man playing for youkai or maybe ghosts, I think.
What didi you think of SWD? I thought it had some brilliant elements however it didnt gel,but maybe a film like this is better off like that. Ringo shooting the snake out of the air, pulling out the egg,and adding it the sukiyaki was awesome. Some other scenes, the snowy battle scene at the end where the gun is nearly cut by a sword. I thought the costume design was creative as well

Hoichi is singing the legend of the Hieke and Genji! Thats how the story was told back in the days, but his singing is so beautiful that the ghost of the loosing clan make him sing for them. But the poor guy is blind so he doesn’t know he’s singing to the ghost about themselves. I don’t know why thats one of my favorite segments in film. Kwaidan was all done in a set, the most expensive japanese film of the time.
I don’t think ZWD was one of those projects Miike paid extra attention to. I also loved the opening sequence, with the egg. And I loved the QT parts. At one point they are talking about the name Akira and QT aknowledges that the name comes from the anime Akira. Remember that part where they guy is trying to catch the sword between his hands? I’m cracking up just thinking about it.

In Sukiyaki Western Django, a number of references are made to real Eastern and Western folklore heros, historical battles and figures, and stories. Here are some that I’ve found. I don’t think Bloody Benton is any reference to a real life figure, but it would be awesome if she was.
I didn’t think this film was that great, but the concept was. The idea of forcing Japanese actors to speak English phonetically was a brilliant idea, although it didn’t turn out quite as cool as it sounded. Anyway here they are:
