Man, I usually enjoy the lists he puts out. They’re so often a nice break from the usual same old titles being put out there, but there seems to be plenty of that here.
The ONLY titles I’m excited to see here are ‘Cyrus’ and ‘Greenberg’. Yes, I LOVED ‘True Grit’ and ‘The Kids Are Alright’ (and even ‘Toy Story 3’ is very good for what it is), but they, as I’ve mentioned, are on just about EVERYBODY’S list.
Not crazy about the inclusion of ‘Kick Ass’, but given Tarantino’s taste, I get why it’s here.
‘Knight and Day’? ‘Robin Hood’? Did he see much more than twenty new films? He was always a great source to expose mass audiences to titles they wouldn’t even be aware existed. Poor list.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the presence of bland blockbusters, overhyped actioners, or third-tier comedies. Classic Tarantino.
He must have missed some good stuff. I mean, hell, I’d have several of those on my top twenty, as well, even those that might be not so highly considered by others (Tangled, How to Train Your Dragon), but I only watched about thirty-four movies or so this year, you know? Maybe he didn’t see that much. Hell, Herzog never watches anything. Then again, he doesn’t go and make lists expounding upon the lack of films he saw.
I admire Tarantino a lot, even if I disagree about his taste often. But, oh well! Who cares? I hope he loved these films (although not Robin Hood, and definitely not Kick-Ass). Haha.
Savvy
The fact 3/4 of this list is compiled of American films is information enough to discard it.
^ Stuff I watched at a festival while I waited to get paid for my appearance, right before the THC kicked in.
@Dimitris Psahos
“The fact 3/4 of this list is compiled of American films is information enough to discard it.”
also this:
20.“Jackass 3-D”
Tarantino is just proving his hackiness flows into his viewing habits as well.
Word. I’m actually pretty surprised at just how funny this list is…I mean this is like my 21 year old brothers list except with less Werewolves.
Jackass better than Inception….? Robin hood probably WAS better than Somewhere…because I think in Robin Hood something actually took place.
Plus…we all know he’s missing one thing….Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
The reactions are silly. And of course he saw more than 20 movies, he was the head of the last Venice Film Festival .
Can’t believe he has Enter The Void behind all of those shitty films.
This list has a lot of films in common with my list, but it also has a bunch of crappy American kitsch films. I also think Animal Kingdom is a truly terrible film.
I liked Kick-Ass a lot.
The man has the emotional maturity of a twelve year-old. Sadly, as the box office takings show, so do most males in western society.
I love the fact that EVERY SINGLE FILM SHOWN IN THE DIRECTORS’ CUP IS BETTER THAN ALL THE FILMS TARANTINO PICKED FOR HIS “TOP 20”.
The man has the emotional maturity of a twelve year-old. Sadly, as the box office takings show, so do most males in western society.
I could not make a counter-argument to that.
I wonder what he liked so much about Knight and Day. I saw nothing to even remotely enjoy about that film.
why didn’t he make his list on mubi :O(
haha the only good movie that’s on here isn’t even from 2010
I can’t believe he has ‘Enter the Void’ on there at all. Now there was the work of a filmmaker with the emotional maturity of a twelve-year old.
Anyway, I think you should, collectively-speaking, stone him to death. What a crime it must be to have vastly inferior taste to a bunch of people on an Internet discussion forum. Clearly, he deserves to be branded with the Criterion company logo (Inglourious Basterds style) for even daring to like – GASP! – popular entertainment.
What a rotter!
That looks like a Tarantino list or a list I would expect from his fans.
Take that however you want. :)

Isn’t the point of making a list to discuss it? If Tarantino really had a problem with someone criticizing his opinion he’d shut up (and since I don’t think he’s stopped talking… well, ever… I doubt his ability).
The only thing more annoying than complaining about some random filmmakers taste is complaining about the people that complain their taste.
You know that you – GASP! – are doing the exact thing you’re mocking in your post, right? (And so am I… the cycle continues).
…………………………………………….
It’s a dumb list. Something I’d expect from Tarantino. Though his taste has seen a rather steady decline since he realized the only people that take him seriously in the film world are shallow critics, and horror filmmakers… Didn’t he used to love Wong Kaw-wai, and Abbas Kiarostami (who even did release a film this year…) right up until they snubbed him? It seems the biggest determinate in his favourites lists is his own ego.
Anyway… why are we yet again discussing Tarantino?
“Anyway… why are we yet again discussing Tarantino?”
Fair enough but it’s a surprisingly unadventurous list even from Tarantino. And no horror films but three kid flicks? The man must be going soft in his old age.
That said, I am curious about Amer.
QT’s list does seem particularly lightweight perhaps he’s just being contrary to give PLU something to spewe & chew over:):)… his faves last year had a bit more depth
@Jirin agree re Animal Kingdom (what kingdom?)… it got eighteen Australian Film Award nominations. Vastly over hyped over rated affair,
@Lights in the Dusk… so I should not trek across town to see Enter the Void today?
Tarantino is a jerk.
Tarantino is a hack.
Tarantino is a balding child.
Either Tarantino is doing some real life trolling or he handed the duty of making his favorite films of the year list off to his assistant and Eli Roth compiled it.
But yeah, the list really should be titled 20 movies Tarantino saw last year.
and Eli Roth compiled it
:):)
What the fuck? Where are Black Swan and 127 Hours?
Robin Hood = Hollywood nonsense
Get Him to the Greek = not funny
The King’s Speech and The Fighter = typical/predictable awards show favorites; I thought his list would be more eccentric and unique
How To Train Your Dragon and Tangled = cute, but your “typical” kid’s movies… really, Quentin?
Also, I was almost positive Piranha 3D would make the cut considering how he loves those types of horror flicks.
Amen to: Kick Ass, Social Network, Animal Kingdom, Enter the Void, The Kids Are All Right, Cyrus and Greenberg, Toy Story 3, True Grit
QT is the white line down the middle of the horny preteen road.
I would have expected Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World to be on that list.
What a QT thread where the posters make personal attacks! How shocking! The list is at least less predictable than the responses here.
