It’s on Karagarga, as Man Without A Map, but it has no subs.
I saw it dubbed in Russian without Subtitles, it seems like there is no subtitled version out there, and even in the Japanese box set of Hiroshi Teshigahara´s films did it appear as the only film without subtitles.
ugh i cant imagine ill be able to find a sub file. is that a site like oink/ptp/etc?
The region 2 Japanese box set includes it as well as his lesser-known work, Summer Soldiers (1972). The Ruined Map is certainly appealing visually and has a satisfying performance by the old great Katsu Shintaro taking the lead this time (and I was quite surprised criterion didn’t pick it up). His first color picture and last Abe/Takemitsu collaboration.
@ oopyman: There actually exists custom English subtitles for this film, I believe. The person not knowing Japanese, has translated it from the Russian-dubbed version that apursansar has mentioned. I don’t know which version of the film you have, but if you’re interested in the sub file, I can send you the link. It won’t be perfect, but hopefully the timing fits with your version and you’ll be able to at least understand the film.
Tristan, just take control of your brilliant late grandfather’s estate. He probably has plenty more ruined maps as well as exquisite ones.
I hear you Blue. It’s a lot pressure but fortunately, I got a hold of some unfinished screenplays he started and hope to use them some day (which means I seriously need to work on my Japanese!). Also some family and friends jokingly suggest I take Ikebana/flower arrangement as a career but I’m much less interested in that. I hope I can work within the realm of film in some form or another (my dream would be Film-scoring or screenwriting) and use Gigi’s screenplays.
myra, i dont have it cause i dont have a membership to that site rumple mentioned, but ill keep trying and if i find it ill PM you. thank you for the offer.
THE RUINED MAP is my favorite Teshigahara, although Many people think it is not as good as the previous three, but I find the film amazing and existential dark, the ending is clearer in the visual abstraction and existential thought. I have a link where you can download the movie with ENGLISH subtitles.
The Man Without a Map is a special film. It is for me his fifth best film just escaping the status of masterpiece that he achieved with Face of Another, Woman in the Dunes, Pitfall and Antonio Gaudi. Nonetheless the film is excelllent.

Anyone have a different link for a download with english subtitles?
It’s at KG. That site is pretty well a cinephiles candy store, by far my favourite on the net. Found every film that I’ve been wanting to see, some that have eluded me for almost a decade. If you belong to this site and feel at home here, and are not opposed to downloading a torrent or two, that site should be number one on your list to join. I’d probably send you an invite but I haven’t been a member long enough to get invites.
This was available at ADC for some time now, with improved subs.
Not as good as the other films in the set, but still worth watching if you’re a fan.
Perhaps, like so many of Abe’s work, it is damn near unfilmable
I’m terribly sorry, what’s adc short for?
