THE ANTOINE DOINEL SERIES

Has anyone seen all the movies in the series from ‘The 400 Blows’ to ‘Love On The Run’ by Francois Truffaut? Which is your favorite?

I just watched the whole series last week for the first time. 400 Blows is my obvious pick, but Stolen kisses and Bed and Board may be tied for second. They are all great though.

Yes! I absolutely love the Antoine Doinel Cycle as Truffaut calls it. It’s a difficult decision between 400 Blows and Stolen Kisses for me; I find Bed And Board annoying in that I just want to scream at the screen “Antoine what are you doing?! You have a perfectly happy life! Stop fucking things up for yourself!! Antoine!!” etc and Love On The Run is like a Friends cop out episode when they haven’t got a real script so they do a “Hey, you remember when…” and fill time with clips from previous episodes.

Seen them all many times, and i always hesitate before I put on Love on the Run. Too many flashbacks to the other films, and not enough plot of its own except to tie up the series and not make us feel too bad for poor Antoine. But 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses and Bed and Board are great films, and how could you not round out the series?

Don’t be surprised if you walk around for days saying to yourself, “Antoine Doinel, Antoine Doinel, Antoine Doinel…”

Stolen Kisses hits me in a way that none of the other films do. 400 Blows is the runner up. I doubt anyone will say Love on the Run which is by far the worst of the series, a poorly cobbled together “greatest hits” of a film at a time when Truffaut’s creative prowess was slipping.

Yes, I bought the Criterion collection of the whole series and watched them all. It’s a fantastic series.

“The 400 Blows” is the best of the series. But “Stolen Kisses” would probably come in second.

I can’t believe I just compared Truffaut to Friends.

For me Stolen Kisses comes really close, but none can beat The 400 Blows.

I think Bed and Board is Truffaut’s masterpiece. It’s misunderstood as a comedy- it’s a horror film about marriage.

stolen kisses
antoine and colette
the 400 blows

@greg
LOL, yeah i’ve actually caught myself doing that. What the hell, the name is so fun to say.

I can’t believe that almost no one has mentioned Antoine and Collette, which has got to be one of the best films in there. I mean, I don’t know if it’s up there with The 400 Blows, but it’s definitely up there.

Stolen Kisses rocks, though, ad the supplemental material on that disc (Cannes ’68, The Langlois Affair) is to die for.

I’m pretty sure it’s multi-region on criterion. Plays just fine on my PS3.

so so good.
so good.
hahah.

though i do not like l’amour en fuite. i mean.. truffaut splices in scenes from day for night on there. which can be funny. but then too much of a cop out, i think. the theme song is pretty catchy though.

Love on the Run is one of the few Truffaut films with a mature attitude toward women. In this film, even a “cute blonde” is a human being to be taken seriously.
