Alot of work went into this. Lets all give a round o’ applause to Mr. Cook, and to ourselves, for having significantly better taste than the inferior website that is IMDb!

Great list, I think it’s a good balance. I only wish I had seen enough from the last decade to actually participate. :P

Oh well, there’s always the……….2010s. ;)

Thanks again for putting the hard work together to make this a reality, Adam. An intriguing list to parallel and compare with the auteurs site list, other lists circulating on the web, our own individual lists, etc. I mainly use these lists for finding films I may need to see or re-evaluate. Right now I am waiting for a good DVD copy of Syndromes and a Century to come along from a request, as I saw this streaming in the World Cup event and want to see it again. Glad to see it on the top 10. Recently saw 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days thanks to many recommending it here – a great film! This I saw, with a few others, after submitting my own list, but so be it.

Mulholland crept on to my own list and obviously many others, so no surprise to see it on top. Another film I need to see again – even though my wife is no fan of the film – ha! I remember the spirited debate and timely analysis of the film by the likes of Justin Vicari and others on a Lynch thread or two many months back that got me to completely rethink this important film. Many standout films – even if no real surprises – on that top 10 list. Well, I thought so anyway, as several were on my own list. We all have such good taste, don’t we?

I tried to include a couple of not the usual suspects, as I know others did, too. That’s what makes this a creative exercise. I think all the top-rated films have those key ingredients – artistic merit, good presentation, intriguing storylines, creativity, good cinematography – that we are all looking for in films we admire as cinephiles. Not all our choices are going to be on the top 50, but I am generally happy with what is there, as these films are representative of what turned out to be – against many expectations – a rather fine decade for film. Hollywood is mostly noticeable by its absence – and that’s a good thing. You had to look around in under-explored corners and avoid all the hype to get at the good stuff, but such has always been the case.

What I also would like to see at some point – if possible, Adam – is a list of all the submissions, including films not on the auteurs. Often in those films getting maybe only one vote, are some real undiscovered gems. In any case, I will be seeking out films I haven’t seen from these lists. Thanks!

Fantastic list. Glad that Syndromes and Yi Yi were so high up. But Waking Life didn’t make it. :’(

Thanks, Adam, for taking the time and devotion to do this! :D

The only thing that I would have loved to see make it is “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Seven of my picks made it. Nice job!

Roman, oh man, I didn’t even notice. I love that movie. Surprised it didn’t make it, too.

Savvy

Certainly one of the better consensus lists I have seen.

Thanks you, Adam.

Drew Gregory

I’m surprised Diving Bell and Y Tu Mama Tambien aren’t on the list! Also too bad Dogville didn’t squeeze by!

I really need to see Werkmeister Harmonies and the other 16 I haven’t seen!

Glemaud

I’m mad Dogville even showed up.

Indeed, I second Blue K’s observation.

Now, individual analysis:
1. Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (Hong Sang-soo, 2000) (49)
2. Camel(s) (Park Ki-yong, 2002) (-)
3. Tale of Cinema (Hong Sang-soo, 2005) (-)
4. In the City of Sylvia (Jose Luis Guerin, 2007) (-)
5. Suzhou River (Lou Ye, 2000) (-)
6. Hamaca Paraguaya (Paz Encina, 2006) (-)
7. Mulholland Dr. (David Lynch, 2001) (1)
8. Flooding in the Time of Drought (Sherman Ong, 2009) (-)
9. Unknown Pleasures (Jia Zhangke, 2002) (-)
10. Full Frontal (Steven Soderbergh, 2002) (-)

Placing by Rank on Auteurs List:
1. Mulholland Dr. (David Lynch, 2001)
49. Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (Hong Sang-soo, 2000)

4. David Lynch
8. Hong Sang-soo
9. Jia Zhangke

I’m so proud of 8. Hong Sang-soo. :)
