The Auteurs Best of the Decade Poll

Thanks for your hard work, Adam. I think that he final Top 10 can be regarded a satisfying result, it’s not too much biased due to mainstream exposure. Luckily members on here could demonstrate that the tastes on The Auteurs differ from those on IMDb. I completely agree with you that all of the participants seem to have given their honest opinion regarding which films they hold in high esteem, and I don’t worry that much about the concerns AxelUmog raises, although a different approach might be worth considering when it comes to another poll. This poll not only made me watch some more contemporary films, but the lists also made me discover various interesting films I haven’t heard of before, so it was definitely a success for me.

Yeah, I agree that most people more than likely voted WITHOUT bias, but it was almost SHOCKING how drastic the changes the top 10 underwent that last day of voting 0_0.

Axelumog, I attribute that to how many of the regular posters refrained from posting their lists till the last few days as they wanted to complete viewing various films from this decade that they had missed out to be comfortable enough to craft a list.

Law is right. I actually think that the fairest would be if next time all voters publish their lists on the very last day since it would provide the chance for a more elaborated result.

Just coincidence then that everyone waited and and saw the same select films and ranked said select films highly and they all ripped through the top 10 at the last second?

OR everyone in that particular taste bracket just all “happened” to wait until the last second?

I can’t speak for others, but for me I had my top 10 of the decade list together LONG before Auteurs started their poll, so I kinda have to believe that most other serious people did also.

Updating your list with changes as you go along, yes. Waiting till the last second to see how the chips are falling, then dropping your full top 10…. hmmm.

I can’t really swallow that and maintain much sense of the word “credible”.

Actually I do think it’s a coincedence. Most of the regular posters (which I may be one of) here have no lives whatsoever thus see a high number of films. :)

You seem to have much cofidence in the small portion of relevant films you have seen up to a certain point, but in my opinion it’s far more serious to admit still having to catch up on countless films, and not just updating, but maybe even exchanging the whole list. I was hoping to get the chance to see “West of the Tracks” or some more Lav Diaz films at time, but gave up on it about two days before the poll ended. At least I could finally see “In Vanda’s Room” since I managed to tracked down a subtitled version shortly before the poll ended, and some other discoveries also made it into my list throughout the last few weeks. It’s quite obvious that the true reason for films like “Werckeister Harmonies” and “Syndromes and a Century” making it into the Top 10 towards the end is that those who waited to submit their lists actually made an effort to get to see these, which many who already posted their list in the beginning didn’t even consider. It’s therefore disputable wether having a previous list makes any sense at all, the poll should rather be an opportunity for those who participate to get to watch contemporary masterpieces, even if it means to finish one of these shortly before the poll ends.

Also I think it is important to consider that most cinephiles take too much pride in their lists to alter it for a separate agenda. Besides, the top 10 that we had a couple days before the poll’s end in no way represented the users here. The final 10 did.

I agree with Adam on this. I don’t believe pride would allow most voters to put in tactical lists.

As one of the last minute voters, I’d like to agree with Apursansar that I was watching all the films I hadn’t seen yet, but the reality is I was lazy and forgot the poll was ending so just copied the list I’d posted on another site on New Years Day (Left Field Cinema). Which ironically meant I left out films I’d seen since that were strong contenders, including In Vanda’s Room.

@ Adam,

That is kinda my point. Having the “work in progress” list allowed people to look at it, and say… I don’t think this represents the community accurately, so I need to push ________ films not because I personally think they deserve it, but for the sake of the communal top 10….

I mean even I would have considered switching up my top 10, moving Lost in Translation to number 1 if it meant possibly tie-breaking it into the top 10 somehow!

But I guess I’m no saint like everyone else on these boards =).

Main thing is that people got to influence, like you said Adam, a top 10 that they thought SHOULD be on the auteurs…. as opposed to the actual, anonymous blind list.

All said and done I still think it’s great community list you’d be hard pressed to find a better one, but in the future, and IMO It would really be cool to keep it 100 percent legit. I know The Auteurs wanted you to do it that way Adam, it was flashier, built the hype…. but mark me down on the camp that would prefer it straight legit for next time, that’s all.
