What is the Criterion font?

Colonel Haki

It’s “gotham” by hoefler & frere-jones but I don’t think you can get it for free.

Haki, how much of your covers do you do yourself, and how much is pre-existing material?

You should do a series of posts showing how you put yours together.

Colonel Haki

“pre-existing” I’m not sure I follow. I’ve never taken a photograph and only once hand drawn something. Do you want to know about any cover in particular?

Did you actually buy it, or did you just shop the logo and year off something else?

Colonel Haki

No I used Microsoft Sans Serif and then edit/transform/scale and played with it until it looked OK. It’s not perfect but why quibble over minor details. It may be more noticeable if you are making a full size template (You know front-spine-back) but for a front cover only I say no big deal. Hope I helped.

You have actually helped a ton. Thanks!

Also, I found these fonts that seem to be similar, haven’t quite tested them out in full yet.

Jardun, not bad for a first attempt, but I suggest you use this template: http://www.vgboxart.com/resource/236/criterion.collection/?replies=10 for full covers, it’ll help you get the format right.

Jardun

oh god, that would have been nice to have. I was wondering how everyone got all of their symbols and everything. I made my own everything except the logos at the bottom, took them off the internet. I even made the criterion logo and the buray logo. I actually had a lot of fun doing it too… its a challenge lol.

thanks man, that will come in handy.

Does anyone know if there is a template in PNG format? I’ve been using a homemade template, but there’s always room for improvement. One day I might actually graduate to real Photo Shop as well, though I’ve grown so accustomed to MS Photo Premium it won’t be an easy switch.

Pretty good Jardun. Strong image and color and good work with the title. Now for the not so good (IMO as always), I’ve never seen the C that far south before. It looks a little odd. It might be better to place it in front of the window frame and make it the same color as the title so it has good contrast. Other than that I dig it.

just a practice

Phooey I love your covers, all of them on this page are genius!

Thanks Haki! I have some very obvious problems with layout, but much of that was because I was using guesswork on locating each of the key elements, as well as their size. I was just using the Criterion Blu-rays/dvds I have here, and some images from the internet. Now that I have the format, I no longer have to worry about that and can simply concentrate on the design aspects of the covers. Although I really do have to admit, I had fun making my own criterion and blu-ray logos, and the barcode (as I mentioned). Thanks for the critique and compliments. :)
