RUS, Now that I have had some practice I will try something more original. If I really feel crazy maybe I will try to draw some pictures and then scan them. You don’t get more original than that.
Damn that hasn’t happened in a while.
Do it, Drew. I love to see homegrown work, esp. hand drawn. If you do one, I’ll do one, no photoshop.
What photo/graphics program(s) does everyone prefer to do this with? Kinda wanna take a crack at it myself.
Paint.net – free downloadable program that is a more advanced version of MS Paint. There, now you know my secret; no photoshop, just being a good ol’ cheapskate.
Haha, what’s funny is that I use a Mac and am clueless about photo-editing.
Also paint.net is windows only…
i really liked the Assasination of Jesse James cover, ALTHOUGH i think it would be more appropriate if the focus were on Robert Ford rather than Jesse…but the concept for the cover is extremely good. very attractive and peaceful, much like the film, but with a sense of forboding…if that’s even spelled right.
PHOTOSHOP
although I might try something in ILLUSTRATOR soon
COREL PAINTER is pretty dope too > the liquid ink tools are incredible
here
if you look about, you can probably find a free version of Macromedia Freehand now: it was discontinued about 4 years ago, but as a basic intro to the kind of work you can do with ILLUSTRATOR > very nice and intuitive.
Okay, here’s my first attempt at an Eclipse cover…

And my god, is the Eclipse template is a deceptively difficult nut to crack. It looks so kind and minimalist, but it actually demands work from you. All of those Criterion covers of mine were a walk in the park compared to this.
Hughes’ version of COLOSSAL YOUTH is production-ready. This is an awesome thread guys!
Fantastic, I would fork over the 40-odd dollars to buy that.
These are some amazing DVD covers!
I gave it a shot . . .

So much fun! I’ll probably have to make some more tomorrow.
If you’re on a mac, what’s a free program to use to create these?
Hey Marq, here’s a Ford-centered one I spent more than 5 seconds on:

I liked your idea. I had no idea where to put the title on this, though. Gaaah! Not sure if I like where it ended up.
The duel between JP and Brandon is fierce! You two are amazing. I have loved every single cover. However, my hats off to Samantha for the genius in simplicity award. The Assassination of Jesse James poster sums up the true antihero and theme of the movie. Fantastic!
Inspired by JP’s takes on Lynch . . .

^ all the real girls’ one is fucking great!
:/ i had to beat someone to it

btw, why isn’t there a blu-ray yet of Malick’s The New World? Makes no sense to me.
I love it when nonprofessionals beat the professionals at their own game.
Ooh, I was going to do All the Real Girls too. Awesome work, Brandon.
By all means, please make your own All the Real Girls cover.
I think it’d be great if we saw multiple covers for the same film, to see different styles and techniques used to represent the same work.
Would anyone happen to know a program for mac which would allow me to do as you’ve done?
Regards.
Yes, why hasn’t there been a bluray of The New World? I’ve been waiting for that one, keeping myself from buying it very cheaply at Borders…oh well. Oh, and, by the way, this happens to be one of the most awesome threads on here.
Savvy
This thread just made my day!

Just saw The Brother’s Bloom by Rian Johnson; that deserves a criterion edition, real or imagined.
