The Auteurs' Fake Criterion Covers

Here’s a cover for an earlier challenge idea: Remakes of films that should never be remade. This is basically an exercise in cinematic sacrilege, but it’s pretty fun nonetheless. After toying with the idea of James Cameron’s 2001 and Zach Braff’s The Bicycle Thieves, I finally settled on this, which is what you would get if you stripped the original of its central message or any redeeming qualities:

Synopsis: After failing to control its country’s Islamic extremists, the government of Algeria asks for help from the US military. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Colonel Jack Matthews (Ed Harris) and an elite team of commandos infiltrate the old city of Algiers to root out the diabolical leaders of its bomb network, Jaffar (Yigal Naor) and Ali La Pointe (Art Malik). Things get complicated when a young sergeant under Matthews’ command (Ryan Reynolds) unwittingly falls for one of the terrorists (Eva Mendes). This action-packed update to the classic Pontecorvo film will leave you breathless until its stirring conclusion. No subtitles! Kick-ass explosions! Commandos = Good! Terrorists = Bad! Rock the Casbah!

Yeah, I would be moved to commit a violent crime if this were ever given the green light.

Erik: small tip: Try putting a thin border around white covers. Helps them stand out against the white background.

That cover is great, although I would choose to use white on Coppola’s name for some contrast. I like the font especially.
