THE AUTEURS FILM CANON GAME, OR THE MAKING OF THE AUTEURS' TOP 100 FILMS (FINAL AND REVISED)

scorpiorising

Choose which films you want to be included in The Auteur’s Top 100 Films/Film Canon by choosing which film you want to submit as entry in each category.

I was the one who started the original film canon game thread and based on suggestions of other users, I have edited my original categories to come up with this.

1. MUSICAL
2. COMEDY/MOCKUMENTARY/SPOOF/FARCE
3. CLASSIC (pre-1969; doesn’t have to be a classic Hollywood film)
4. CAMP
5. CULT (any film that has a cult following and has been cited as cult films in film books)
6. SHORT FILM
7. HORROR (giallo films included)
8. THRILLER/PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
9. FILM NOIR/NEO-NOIR
10. SILENT (doesn’t necessarily have to be a film from the 1920s-1930s as long as it is silent; not including High Anxiety)
11. DOCUMENTARY
12. B-MOVIE/Z-MOVIE
13. SCI-FI
14. QUEER (any kind of film as long as it has LGBT themes, characters, elements, etc.)
15. AVANT-GARDE/EXPERIMENTAL
16. KIDS/ANIMATION
17. WESTERN
18. WAR/EPIC/ANTI-WAR
19. MARTIAL ARTS
20. ROMANCE/ROMANTIC COMEDY
21. DRAMA/MELODRAMA
22. EXPLOITATION/EROTIC
23. ACTION/CRIME (non-film noir/non-neo noir crime films and action-packed films)
24. POETIC/SURREAL
25. GUILTY PLEASURE (any film that you guiltily enjoy; by any film I mean ANYTHING)
26. FREE PICK (please choose any film you like and mention which most appropriate category you think it should be placed in)

ANY ACADEMY AWARD BEST PICTURE WINNERS WILL NOT BE COUNTED
ANY FILMS FROM THE IMDB TOP 250 LIST WILL NOT BE COUNTED (ask me why, and I’ll give you a whole essay)

RULES:
1. Any film that is listed in the IMDB’s top 250 list will not be counted and not be considered as entries. If you do submit one, I’ll notify and ask you to change it to another film.
2. That also goes for Academy Award Best Picture winners for obvious reasons.
3. Don’t submit a film that has already been mentioned by another user. You can check the third post in this thread to see which films have already been submitted as entries. I’ll notify you if there are repetitions.
4. If you are not familiar with a genre or choose not to include any in that category, then just leave it blank.
5. If a user thinks that another user’s pick for a certain category doesn’t fit in that category, the user can challenge the other user.
6. I know that films can be of different genres. A short film can be a horror film, a classic film can be a comedy film but think where you want to place them, think where you want them to compete against. Think in which category will a certain film most likely win in.
7. Respect others’ taste in movies no matter how questionable they may be.

HOW THE TOP 100 FILMS WILL BE DECIDED (25 categories * 4 films =100)
1. Each user can submit 25 films, one for each category.
2. When a considerable number of people have already submitted their entries or depending on how many people are interested in doing the film canon game, I’ll decide when to close the submission of film entries.
3. After the deadline of the submission of entries, for each category, I’ll post which films have been submitted and accepted. And each user should choose a maximum of four films in each category that they want to be included in the list. And I’ll count which four films have gotten the highest number of votes.
I’ll show an example by using films that will not be considered in this list.

For example these are the submitted entries for one category
Casablanca
The Night of the Hunter
The Wizard of Oz
The Third Man
The Wages of Fear
The Apartment
Bringing Up Baby
Rear Window

And a user must choose a maximum of four films from these submitted entries that he or she wants to be included in the list.
Bringing Up Baby
The Night of the Hunter
The Apartment
The Wizard of Oz

And after the deadline of choosing four films, I will count the votes and choose the four films that have gotten the highest number of votes.

@ Jaime Gomez: Thanks for putting in your picks but Little Miss Sunshine, Howl’s Moving Castle and The Thing are included in the IMDB’s top 250 list so I won’t be counting them. Please replace them with others that aren’t in the IMDB’s top 250 list.

And L’Age D’or is not a short film. Technically a short film is a film that is less than an hour.

HMC is no longer on the list, I checked, about The Thing it just slipped, LMS wasn’t in the list a day ago and it just went up. The Fly (1986) then for Terror. American Graffitti (1973) for Comedy. Adaptation. (2002) as my extra pick in Comedy.

But how about L’age d’or (not a short film) and Howl’s Moving Castle?

Hol’s Moving Castle is not on the Top250 list anymore. L’Age D’OR is 30 mins. long, it is a short.

“L’Age D’OR is 30 mins. long, it is a short.”

Um, what are you smoking? You are probably thinking of Un Chien Andalou :)

THE OX-BOW INCIDENT IS IN IMDB’S TOP 250. Feel free to replace it with something else.

Usually, La Belle et la bete is in the top 250 film list. But for now, it isn’t so I’m still counting it for now XD.

In which category do you want to place Andrei Rublev? Classics?

And it isn’t that obvious that you’re a Carl Theodor Dreyer fan… 4 movies of his in your picks XD.

PoopButt

Replace Ox-Bow with The Searchers. Place Andrei Rublev into the Classic Category.
