The Auteurs Film Club

Joshua W

I don’t really know what to call it, but I figured on starting a film club for Auteurs members who run their own blogs. The idea is that once five or six people agree to participate, we can assign a movie a month, preferably something available on netflix or whatever, and all write a review on it. One person can host and we can all link to eachother’s articles.

Nerdy, but fun, I think. Anyone else interested? Of course if there’s no interest this thread will die a slow and horrible death, but y’know. It’s worth a shot. Post the link to your blog as well.

Sounds like a great idea. We should all add permanent links to each other’s sites, or something. Like, have a spot that says "This site is part of The Auteurs Film Club. Here are links to the other sites involved: "

…or something like that.

As I said in the other thread, definitely interested. I think the best way to do this, is to pick a movie first then see who wants to do it that month. I only say in this order because not everyone has netflix, and whether or not someone has access to a specific movie is never guaranteed.

Just wanted to add, like Adam’s idea. We could all add like an Auteurs sidebar widget.

I do not own a movie blog and just got to the forum – still lurking.
But the idea is great and if you guys really start the Film Club reviews, be sure to have a reader here.

I’ll get to making a logo for our respective sidebars for the permanent links. 200 × 100 good for everyone?

im using a custom wordpress, but as long as it doesnt exceed 289px its fine.

Joshua W

rad. i know it works fine with most blogger templates, so good stuff. it’ll just be a shitty little thing, but yeah, we can put that on the side and the permanent links to the other film blogs. anyone got any votes for which film to start with? and do you think a month is a long enough amount of time to find and review said film? as in, if we picked one today, we could start on April 2nd.

Also, I think each month whoever picked the film should host the club for that month. That way they can post each individual link and everyone else can just link to them. It’ll give that person a little bump in hits for that month, as well as assist in keeping our blogs a little more streamlined.

i think a month is fine. and depending on how many people are interested, we could simply cycle in/out reviewers. Not that anyone would be left out, merely that if one or two bloggers wanted to take a break for a month, they easily could.

As for what film for the first month…honestly, im open to whatever.

Joshua W

yeah, i figure if people can’t find the film or don’t feel up to it, it’s not like it has to be mandatory.

…since no one else has thrown in suggestions for films I guess I’ll start. In relation to the recent thread I already made about this and the fact that basically anyone should be able to view it for free, I’ll suggest Sita Sings The Blues.

I’m totally in if you’ll have me!

I’ve been wanting to be a little more focused in what I post on my blog, and would really be interested in this idea!

I’m excited.

Joshua W

I’ve been meaning to watch Sita Sings the Blues as well, so that’s fine with me.
As for the sidebar, I made two logos, one’s 100 × 200 the other’s 200 × 200 which is the one I’m gonna use because I think it looks better, but it’s up to you. And of course you guys can make your own if you’d prefer not to use these, but i think they do the job:

PS: if you can’t tell, my photoshop skills are limited as fuck.

PPS: Crap Monster, you should make one. Your blog is pretty graphically inclined.

Joshua, this is an awesome idea! It is something we’ve wanted to build a space for on The Auteurs for some time: a “movie of the month” club where people can gather and write about the topic from wherever they are coming from (such as on their own blogs) and gather the links and discussion here. This is a feature we really want to add, and perhaps you can get the ball rolling in exciting the community before we are able to design and deploy a space. Send me a PM and we’ll talk about it more.

Daniel – Thanks, I’ll definitely message you. It’s a nerdy but fun idea, thus perfect for the Auteurs.

Also, because both of those logos looked awful on my blog, I screwed around with the second one to make it a) black and white and b) film grainy. So this is what I’m using:

This is a great idea! Danny and I will work on adding a home for the film club in the community page. Danny, loop me in to the discussion, and everyone, please feel free to ask for any sort of support you might need. We can work on creating a custom widget- we can do the photoshop and add functionality- perhaps it can update to show the name of the film of the month. Let me know what you’d like!

OK this is very interesting because this is one of the Garage projects as yet unannounced. So I’ll get back to all of you and we’ll incorporate.

This almost makes me want to start my own blog, almost.

Joshua W

Yeah, you important folk all confer and get back to us. I don’t mean to have any claims on running this thing, as honestly I posted because I thought it’d be fun and hadn’t seen anything about it. As long as it gets off the ground one way or another.

Edouard Hill

This is rather exciting, I think that we need to figure out exactly how its going to go cause I’m definitely down, yet a little confused as to the direction this thread is taking the idea. Also, should this be focused on newer films coming out or a mix of newer and older films?

Jake Howell

This is pretty sweet, and I feel somewhat responsible for being the inspiration behind this idea because I started the “Film Blogs” thread. ; )

I guess I’ll have to bow out as I don’t download movies. I refuse to watch them on my crappy computer screen while sitting at a desk. Besides it takes hours for me to download one anyways.

haha wow, the direction and speed this is developing is unexpected….

im not even sure whats going on anymore. is this going to be officially part of the auteurs now? joshua, if we could get some updates that would be awesome.

oh and love the banners man! I could do some, but I’m wondering if this becomes a feature on theauteurs, if whether or not they would want some more direct branding? Melissa Miranda mentioned making a widget themselves so who knows….

Hi guys,

The general update is that we had something like this in mind as a feature or location on the site already. Simultaneously someone else started a thread about Movie of the Month, which is a similar idea. Meanwhile, T is working on the Garage. So before these four things mature indepedently, we are talking about how to best use the ideas and incorporate them into the site without conflicting.

Edouard Hill

Excellent Daniel! please just keep us updated on what you guys are gonna end up doing.

just curious but…whats the status with this one?
