Portuguese Man-o-War

These creatures have a very nasty sting-they swarm by the thousands near the shore and close beaches in Hawaii and Australia. They apparently resemble a kind of Portuguese ship – hence the name. A bum rap. Kenji, I wonder if they even exist in Portugal. In your travels there, have you ever seen them?

Ali

Every now and then they even venture up here. Rumours of Portuguese men-o’-war circulate in summer like rumours of sharks on Bondi Beach.

Ali

We get lots of these on Formby Beach

They’re quite handsome, I’m not sure if they sting.

Nohea

That is a beautiful creature – I’d venture to guess it stings. Where are you Ali? Australia?

Ali

Liverpool :) We do NOT get great whites round here! (Or Portuguese MOW’s much: it was on teh south coast that they were regularly sighted – well, they or a plastic bag …)

P.S. De profundis part II, can’t resist this one

Nohea

Wow…jellyfish in Liverpool ! So they don’t only grace the tropical shores.

I’ve been stung numerous times as a child by the man-o-war. Thankfully I was not allergic. The turtles and squid would eat them – their skin so thick the venom does nothing.

guys..

we just got a wave of traffic to this thread over the weekend.. had no idea it existed. time to create a separate section of the forum for off-topic discussion.. a speakeasy zone (the ‘lobby’ where the cinephiles gather after the show to discuss animals, teenage girls and violence or whatever else you fancy)..

big bertha loves the spot light..I’ve seen her and babies several times…they are like homing pigeons

Nohea

I think this was alll bertha’s doing..she is quite playful..on nights when there are no dives, the lights remain on for the mantas to eat…might be on this night she was weary of the bright lights
