excellent idea
the only caveat is that it would be best to expand it to top 20-25
top 10 is just too restrictive
I’m in.
I’d be up for this.
Three thumbs up.
I can handle things! I’m smart, I’m smart, not dumb like everybody says. Which is to say, I would totally be interested.
I’m wondering if we can already take an average from the lists already posted. If not, I’d like to do it.
Definitely. 10 is best. sweat out your decisions. I am totally up for putting-off things to do this. grading mid-terms can wait. this is priority.
Since R.U.S. says yes, that makes it definite – yes.
There are a couple of top 10 threads, top 20 threads, top 100 threads, etc. – plenty of material is already here, so this might be redundant. When I tried to do a ‘canon’ type thread, I looked through several of these and noticed many films appearing again and again. On the other hand, some people had very unusual listngs. My only problem is that by doing a ‘popularity’ type polls, these more seldom mentioned items will automatically drop off. If you expand to say 100, then some might make it on. But by all means, try again for this, as I was thinking along similar lines when doing the ‘canon’ thread. Just so we all realize that a lot of great films will NOT show up on a listing of top 10, even on this site. In any case, what would make it more interesting is for some of us (more cynical types) to see if we could ‘predict’ the outcome from what has already been posted and our own guesses as to what is bound to be on this list. Here is my prediction (off the top of my head): 2001, Third Man, 8 1/2, Rashomon, Vertigo, The Godfather 1, Fargo, Fanny & Alexander, Solaris, Citizen Kane (close: The Searchers, Taxi Driver, 400 Blows, Blade Runner, Psycho) – you get the idea. Does such a list prove anything? In any case, we’ll never know until somebody does it – so by all means…Place your bets here.
so long as DARK KNIGHT doesn’t pop-up on the list, I think we’ll be fine. of course a lot of great movies won’t show up on the list. I fully expect some of my favorites not to be there.
400 BLOWS
PUBLIC ENEMY
THE RED SHOES
would clearly be in my top ten (actually, PUBLIC ENEMY might only make top 15) but I would be surprised if they made the final ten. it would be a fun experiment. I like Adam’s idea of only a select number of people (otherwise we’d lose the fun of exclusion). The boards would go ape shit with flaming and bitching about the final list, and the enjoyment of the site would be totally ruined as a result.
but I’m not saying don’t do it. like the Hadron Collider, yes, it MAY cause a black hole and end life as we know it, it MAY.
but, you know, c’mon, we wanna see it.
This supposed to be as objective as possible, right? (Even though I think it is impossible for a person to be objective in such a matter) I’ll definitely try to stay away from the canonical classics (i.e. Kane) but one or two might sneak onto my list (probably 8 1/2). Anyway, sure, I’ll do it.
this all sounds very terrific.
Alright, sounds like this could work. In response to this being yet another list thread, I see this as different. As a fan of the Sight & Sound system that inspired this, I see this as a really credible and quotable list. We are all thoughtful film lovers who have respectable opinions, and when looking at the scale (50 or 100 users), the final product will actually mean something.
So 50, or 100 users? 100 would, obviously, cover a wider spread of opinions, but I’m not sure if 100 people will want to do this. I’m fine with either 50 or 100, ideally, 100 would be best.
Yes please
OK, well, lets start with 50, and if there’s demand, I’ll consider changing it. So if you want to do this, just post here that you want to register.
I’d like to register
Great idea Adam! In the future, we’d like to build a custom voting system so you don’t have to do the hard work of tallying and the site does it for you, but keep up the great work in the mean time! I especially like the idea of registering here in this thread beforehand and then starting the poll.
I’ll register, thanks (got to see how my predictions work out). Good luck with the tally!
I’d like to register, I’m on this like a fat kid on a Smartie!
How can one register?
OK, how about we use feedback from the entire community to determine The Auteurs Top 10 and showcase them on dashboard? I’m thinking we take into account all the activity around the film to determine this:
of course ratings and favorites by our top members (more on our reputation system coming soon) would have higher weight. what do you guys think?
I want to register, seems interesting.
it sounds great.
I’m interested, I’ll register.
OK, so far we have…

I’m in…. but the number of times a film is favourited here is no barometer… lots of films are not available to nominate… Grapes Of Wrath for one, which regularly makes top 10’s everywhere.
*ahem Dude… Have you forgotten about me?
I’m in… but… I have a mistrust of the scope/50 person only sign-up… there are thousands of users on The Auteurs. Most of them don’t post in the forum: many are Notebook readers and filmwatchers. Some are Garage filmmakers. Reducing this list to fifty people who have seen this thread isn’t representative of the whole userbase, and therefore missing out on a true representation of the audience here. To make this really effective (it’s a great idea), we need to find a way to reach out to everyone and give them the chance to a) hear about the project and b) chime in… otherwise it can’t really be called an Auteurs’ user poll. I suggest a bit of collaboration and planning, and some web/code architecture to make for easy voting. How were you going to tally/weigh the votes?
Adam Cook
I imagine most of you are familiar with the Sight & Sound Poll conducted every decade. If not, just google it and take a look. Anyways, I was thinking we should have an Auteurs Poll with the same or similar formula. A certain amount of users would register (50? 100?). Each user would select what is in their opinion, the ten best films of all time, and the ten best directors of all time. I would keep track of the voting, and once everything is totaled, we could see what the official “Auteurs” top ten is.
For now, I’m just looking for feedback to see if there is enough interest.
