I thought your name was a reference to Dogma…..

Please be patient waiting for the results, I’ll work as fast as I can and I’m not sure how long it will take.

Anyways, I figured it’s only fair to post my list for all to see, as I get to see everyone else’s, so here it is:

8 ½ – Federico Fellini (1963) Italy

2001 A Space Odyssey – Stanley Kubrick (1968) USA

Aguirre, the Wrath of God – Werner Herzog (1972) Germany

Apocalypse Now – Francis Ford Coppola (1979) USA

Citizen Kane – Orson Welles (1941) USA

The Decalogue – Krzysztof Kieslowski (1989) Poland

Fitzcarraldo – Werner Herzog (1982) Germany

Princess Mononoke – Hayao Miyazaki (1999) Japan

Seven Samurai – Akira Kurosawa (1954) Japan

Synecdoche, New York – Charlie Kaufman (2008) USA

Rich Uncle Skeleton

lol, why does everyone have trouble with alphabetical order?

Bob Stutsman

Adam – when you have completed your tallies, are you planning to post everyone’s list or should we post them individually here? In any case, this is what I sent Adam:

1. 8 ½ – Frederico Fellini
2. 2001 – Stanley Kubrick
3. Blowup – Michelangelo Antonioni
4. Grapes of Wrath – John Ford
5. Last Year at Marienbad – Alain Resnais
6. Rashomon – Akira Kurosawa
7. Stalker – Andrei Tarkovsky
8. The Third Man – Carol Reed
9. Vertigo – Alfred Hitchcock
10. Wild Strawberries – Ingmar Bergman

A bit too ‘Joe Arthouse’ (as I was informed on a different Criterion forum), but these are my long time favourites. I am hoping the final list from Adam’s compilation will be less predictable than mine. Thanks, Adam.

I plan on publishing everyone’s lists eventually. I also plan to post a breakdown of the films voted for by country and year.

Filmy

this is more exciting than the oscars!!

Bob Stutsman

Thanks, Adam – you’re The Man. It should be very revealing – everyone has to show their hand, so to speak. I bet 2001 makes it to the ‘final’ cut, based on preliminary top ten postings!

Filmy Andy: Because it’s like the Oscars should be – based on quality, not hype and whether it hits the proper sentimentality quotient. We auteurs can’t be bought either – unless someone wants to bribe us with a box load of Criterions…

Filmy

Bob, I am throwing an after party if 2001 ends up in top3, no hype only love and appreciation for magnificent art

dope fiend willy

2001
Andrei Rublev
Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo.
Children of Paradise
Citizen Kane
Ivan the Terrible saga

2001: A Space Odyssey
8 1/2
A Clockwork Orange
Citizen Kane
The Godfather
Persona
Rashomon
The Searchers
Taxi Driver
Vertigo

That is the list I submitted, but Apocalypse Now has replaced The Searchers on my current list. I guess my picks aren’t the most creative but what can I say. I’m pretty confident 2001 will make the final cut.

This IS fun.

Fellini, Kubrick and Bergman are making most of the lists, but it looks like it will be a battle between their respective best films.

And rock-on that Eisenstein’s IVAN hits so many!

Crap Monster

Adam, why did you think my name was a reference to Dogma? I’ve seen the film but its been a while…..

I want to say that I’m proud of having seen Fellini and Kubrick in many lists!

They are two of my favorite directors but didn’t show up in my list. Strange how that works out. If I made a top ten directors list a lot of the directors from my top ten films list wouldn’t show up either though.

Did anyone else annotate their lists?
I annotated mine for both mini-justification and personal affectation of each film I selected. I won’t reproduce my list here as list publication by Adam is forthcoming, but I was just wondering.

Edouard Hill

I’m glad to be seeing so much Dreyer and Kieslowski! I was hoping that the both of these artists would be represented not only in my list but in the lists of others, and crosses fingers THE list!

Orphan Seasun

@Matthew Griffiths: Thank god someone voted for it. I adore The Passenger; I neglected to include it on my list.

Umberto L.

Does DEKALOG count as a single film?

I thought it was a TV series whose episodes came out in a random order. Many of ’em also have a double version…

So, even HEIMAT and BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ count as single films?
