The Auteurs "Sight & Sound" Poll

Crap Monster

Id like to participate, but I have to ask….under what contexts should the films/auteurs be judged?

There is so many variables at stake that I think it would help immensely if this was specified before its begun. Of course, more then one variable works but clarification of any level may direct us in the path towards objectivity.

I think it should be any context you can think of, “Crap Monster.” If you want to create a list of films that best represents your taste in film (i.e. french, italian, noir, western, etc…) then choose like that. If you want to choose the films you can’t live without, then choose that. If you want to choose a wide array of films, and make your list as diverse as possible then choose that way. I think one of the best things about the sight & sound poll is looking at the individual lists from like Ebert, and Ritchie, and Saito, and Kaurismaki etc… and seeing their criteria for choosing films.

I’d like to be included.

hmm ok, I think I sort of misread the purpose of the poll hence my confusion. Either way, sounds like fun so I’m still in!

just had an idea, but it’s gonna be a lot of work, and would only be an aside to a master list.

everyone seems to be having a hard time filtering their picks down to ten, so:

what if everyone made decade lists a la “sight and sound?”

What I mean is, i’ll make a 1952 list, so I can only pick films made up to 52, then one for 1962, 72, 82, etc. (my 2009 list being the list taken for submission and used for the master poll). It would be interesting to see what we drop out each decade and what we keep. Much like the actual S&S lists, my 1952 list would probably be half silents, whereas my 2009 list will probably have none. If anything, it might help people who are having trouble to start stripping their lists down to the bare essentials.

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

JP Belmondo: If you’re going to start that brainstorming thread, could you post a link to it in this thread?

I love Rich’s idea. That’s a fantastic idea. My mind is now racing with the possibilities.

The thread has been somewhat derailed since there is disagreement over what the thread’s purpose actually is, if it has one, and how someone should go about making a list. Rich Uncle brings up quite few interesting points that has me reconsidering my method, but anyway, there’s the link.

It’s a lot more effort…. but fun…. I’d be tempted to get the first stage right before we expand?

Does it have to be 50 or 100? I tend to think we should get as many opinions as we can.

Jordan H

@Justin:

Once we get 50 people (which looks like it’s going to happen), I think we’re going to open the list up to 100 people.

Considering that we are planning to set a deadline that gives us time to rewatch movies and such, I see no reason why we can’t open this up to more people in the meantime.

How long does everyone want to think over their lists?

I am ready whenever. Yes, I keep watching new things, but I am sticking to films I have loved, so I am hardly going to change my mind over the next several days. The only challenge we all have is narrowing it down to a final ‘10’. Let’s go before too long, so that others can join in at a later point. Otherwise, for those of us that are ready, we could submit right away, and others could submit as they are ready, within a time limit. In any case, I am good to go, Adam!

hey! let’s turn this into the Oscars:

“i will pay everyone thousands of dollars to vote for Cannibal!: The Musical as their number one.”

, said the official lobbyist for Troma.

Bob Stutsman

NEH: It’s now on my list – now show me the money!

Justin Biberkopf

Now Orgazmo or South Park, I think I could take a dive on those, but not Cannibal.

Why don’t we send our lists to Adam as private messages so we can be all ultra secret and Oscary about it?
