I’d love to be a part of this as well. It’s a teriffic idea I’d love to see what a general group of film lovers consider the greatest films of all time. I hope there is space left!

The 100th spot was taken 26 hours before the Oscars (my time). Now to make sure everyone gets their votes in. I wonder if anyone’s campaigning behind the scenes like Harvey Weinstein; madly PMing Auteurs members in support of some obscure 1920s Mongolian film.

Rich Uncle Skeleton

why not just keep adding whoever wants to participate up until the deadline?

the more voters the better.

Orphan Seasun

Well for one, I can imagine Adam would like to forget about stage one. Now he can relax and collate the 50 or so lists already submitted – adding the others as they trickle in. Also, I don’t get how it will magically make the final result more diverse to allow more people. In the end the final 10 is achieved via consensus. I could even see a larger group giving rise to a less surprising top ten, but I may be wrong about that. More people would certainly add to the diversity of the submitted films. Also, when do we stop? If you want to dismiss the 100-person limit, why not move the March 1st deadline as well?

I’m just throwing some things out there. I’m not trying to exclude anyone; if Adam wants to expand this, fine by me. I’ll even help with the data.

Sean Keeley

Justin Biberkopf

Adam, not that I don’t trust you… but would you mind posting your own top ten list so we can all know that the final list isn’t just your own ten favorite films! lol. I’m kidding. Good luck crunching all them numbers.

adam

hello, been away for a while, would it be possible for you to post a quick recap of the rules? i’ll get my list done today.

Orphan Seasun

There are few rules. Choose ten films you love. Your choices can include short films and animation; old or new. For Adam’s sake submit the list alphabetically and include the director’s full name – you can simply send your ten to Adam Cook. That’s about all. He would like everyone’s lists by March 1st. Hope that helps.

On a side note – I just finished watching Frozen River (2008). Wow, good film. :)

Phil

We may want to accept more than 100 people into this poll. Consider the possibility that the 100 we currently have may not submit their lists on time. Keep accepting people right up until the deadline, with the understanding that only the first 100 lists submitted will be accepted in the poll.

Option 2 — If you insist on only 100 people, but don’t get all the lists in on time, just wait until you get all their lists.

Option 3 — This is a little outside of the box. Who cares how many people submit lists? Let as many join and submit lists as they want, and calculate the votes based on what you have at the deadline. 109? 123? 133 lists? Who cares? This is easy for me to say, of course, I’m not doing any of the work involved.

Just some thoughts.

Fred O.

I would definitely like to participate in this poll.

After reading all of your thoughts I have decided to leave registration open for the time being. It is possible some people may not submit a list, and I’d like to better our chances of actually receiving 100 lists. Also, I don’t much feel like excluding anyone. However, to give myself a couple days before the deadline to focus on the next stage of things:

Registration will be closed as of Friday, February 27th. This makes Thursday night the last opportunity to join in.

In the meantime, I’m in a dilemma and I need help to figure out the best way to solve it. Earlier in the poll, Three Colours – Kieslowski received a vote. More recently, Three Colours: Blue received a vote. I have made a point of not accepting single votes for more than one movie ex: The Godfather Part I and The Godfather Part II must be two separate votes. My one exception so far has been the Decalogue as it is seen as one piece. For Three Colours, should I count it as one entity, or request the voter to specify Blue, White, or Red? All feedback is appreciated…

i can’t wait to see the results! i’m most interested in the debate that follows. for me, the only reason i don’t want to join in is that i can’t pick a top ten movie list. the best i could do is my top 5, but still i dont feel i’ve seen enough movies on an international scale to present a well-rounded list.

maybe i could do it after a lifetime of watching movies though. too early now.

@ Adam

I think that if you’re going to count the two Godfathers as separate then you should count the films in the Colors trilogy as separate as well. When a film can function independently from its series then it should be counted as a single film, not one part of a series. I think that that is the best way, because otherwise you’d have to count Rohmer’s Moral Tales as one film and you could even go so far as to include the entire oeuvre of a filmmaker as one film based on your perception that each is part of one long film, as several directors have referred to their films as one whole film and not separate entities.

Just want to add, for Adam’s sake, please get those lists in to him. Several that signed up early have yet to submit their lists. I know it’s hard to limit it to 10, but you can’t be included if you don’t submit. I want to see everyone who has signed up with a List Submited after their name. Otherwise, if you don’t, it isn’t fair for those who don’t sign up in time. This comes to an end soon. Get cracking!

Rich Uncle Skeleton

@Adam

I was one of those that submitted TROIS COULEURS on my list.

If you need guidance, just consult the “all films voted for” on the sight and sound website.

you will see that it lists independently BLUE, WHITE and RED, but also the trilogy as a whole.

the same applies for GODFATHER, GODFATHER II, GODFATHER I &II, and THE GODFATHER TRILOGY.

it works that if i vote for TROIS COULEURS that is one vote for the trilogy. if someone votes for BLUE, then it totals two votes for BLUE. because, in actuality, two people actually listed the film. I view the trilogy as a linked, interrelated structure that as a whole is stronger than its individual parts.

If I had voted for the UP documentaries (which I came close to doing) would that have been problematic. even if someone else voted for just 49 UP? if a group of films by one director is closely linked togethor (as are TROIS COULEURS, YOJIMBO & SANJURO, GODFATHER I &II, the UP DOCUMENTRARIES), and are by any reasonable viewer seen as being part of the same work, then I think it is ok to vote for them as a whole.

but if someone voted for, say, SEAN CONNERY JAMES BOND FILMS as a group, I think we’d have to draw the line.

Matthias Galvin

To make deference to the most recent issue of the Sight and Sound top 10 poll…
They considered The Godfather & The Godfather, Part II a single work, and put individual votes for either of the two films towards them as a single work, and also put votes for the trilogy as a whole as votes for those two works. However, this is only known because the work(s) made the final list. Exploring the films voted for, a few critics/directors opted to vote for a single film in the Three Colors trilogy, and there were also those who voted for the trilogy itself.

It shouldn’t matter how Adam arranges the top 10 list, as long as he’s consistent on the treatment of films that are parts of a greater arc, and makes it clear how he counted films.

Orphan Seasun

Perhaps I’m way off base, but I don’t understand the many users saying things like, “I still have so many films to watch”. I had a terrible time choosing as has everyone, but that was because I had 100 films that could honestly fill a list. The trouble was choosing which ones; in the end I chose a quick ten and sent it off. It’s just by misplaced opinion, but if you haven’t lived with a film for months better yet a few years it has no business being on your top ten list.

“Grumpy old man” setting – off.
