“Perhaps I’m way off base, but I don’t understand the many users saying things like, “I still have so many films to watch”. I had a terrible time choosing as has everyone, but that was because I had 100 films that could honestly fill a list. The trouble was choosing which ones; in the end I chose a quick ten and sent it off. It’s just by misplaced opinion, but if you haven’t lived with a film for months better yet a few years it has no business being on your top ten list.”
I think it’s fair to say that everyone has at least 100 films that could go on the list, my first off the top of my head had around 350. However, when you get down to the nitty gritty and you have 11 or 12 movies that all really really deserve to be on the list, I think it’s only fair to rewatch them all in order to figure out which ones actually deserve to be eliminated.
I’m just assuming you were responding to me as your comment came right after mine, but I think it helps to rewatch old favorites. That said, you’re right in saying that no one should be looking for new movies to put on the list.
Yes your remark reminded me of it, but as for my comments coming immediately after yours it could hardly be helped. I said, “many users”, and I meant it. And yes I was thinking more of those watching new films – some comments seemed to imply this.
Thanks for your comments they’re of course legitimate, but I don’t need your motivations explained to me I understand them. For me, “deserve”, has nothing to do with it when only ten spots are available. Do you honestly think you will be contented with your final list of ten? I don’t think a cinéaste could ever be satisfied with such a short list; it’s an uncomfortable compromise. That’s the point of choosing quickly – mincing about deciding which great work of art should go before another is silly in my opinion and it’s one reason why there’s concern some lists won’t arrive in time. How do you rate old lovers? In fact, this metaphor applies awkwardly because each film remains a lifelong lover.
350 in your head hey? I’ll refrain from comparing the lengths of our lists it seems a tad phallic, but your hang-up with empirical data explains a lot. : )

Why are people submitting directors lists? Have the rules changed or have I misunderstood?
In the initial post, it read “Each user would select what is in their opinion, the ten best films of all time, and the ten best directors of all time.” That is why I submitted two lists. One or two of my best films were not directed by any of my top ten directors.
Oprhan you didn’t, if people actually read through the whole threads they would know its suppose to be only one list. Im not sure exactly if Adam Cook cares or not, but that was the original instructions.
finally got my list in today, it took some doing but its pretty much the most definitive top ten iv ever done -
