THE BEST ANIMATED FILMS OF THE 90S

Cody Hoskins

It’s hard to think of enough 90s cartoons that did that well or have gained a strong cult following other than the Disney films like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. Are there any non-Disney films that you really like? The ones that come closest to my mind are Fern Gully, Little Nemo, and The Prince of Egypt.

I feel that animation was really pigeon-held by Disney and Pixar during that decade and every other animated film made outside of that was averagely reviewed or lowly commercial. Films like The Pagemaster, The Swan Princess, Quest for Camelot, Thumbelina, The Pebble and the Penguin, A Troll in Central Park, Balto, and Once Upon A Forest have been sorely underrated and I haven’t watched them in a long time, which I guess shows how they haven’t held up good since my childhood. I personally think it’s because they’re simple kids’ entertainment but not enough that is pleasing for the adults, which is why the Disney films appealed more. They had very well-developed characters, well-paced stories, and good songs that they felt like classic Hollywood films in animation.

What are some of your favorites from that era if I missed any?

A few that come to mind:

Princess Mononoke
The Nightmare Before Christmas (Stop-motion counts as animation, right?)
Ghost in the Shell
Whisper of the Heart
James and the Giant Peach

I haven’t seen it, but I have been wanting to check out Kirikou and the Sorceress for a while now.

Also, am I the only person in the world that didn’t really care for the first Toy Story film? It seems that way sometimes.

The Iron Giant is also the first film that came to my mind, and I haven’t even seen it yet. I enjoyed The Rescuers Down Under, but I was 8 when it came out, so maybe child’s eyes or nostalgia factor in. Same goes with Fievel. All Dogs Go to Heaven came out in 1989, but I liked that one a lot.

@Captain: I liked the first Toy Story, but I really didn’t care for Toy Story 3. Oh, and then was apparently diagnosed as having no soul by every member of Facebook.

South Park, Toy Story 1-2, Perfect Blue

Princess Mononoke’s okay. I think they took shortcuts with their plotting. Nobody ever had a plan other than ‘Run into the enemy stronghold headlong and make righteous speeches’. Laaaazy plotting.

I like Toy Story 2-3 a lot more than 1.

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (Phil Nibbelink, Simon Wells / USA / 1991)

I would like to add (if not listed yet):

Aeon Flux (TV)
Duckman (TV)
Whisper of the Heart
Porco Rosso
anything by Bill Plympton
Only Yesterday
Jan Svankmajer’s Faust (mixed)

Wow, totally forgot about Svankmajer. Faust or Conspirators of Pleasure would be fine choices.

Can’t stand Pixar myself. There movies just seem like 1 long chase scene after another.

- A Goofy Movie
- Toy Story
- Beavis And Butt-head Do America

- Cats Don’t Dance
- The Prince Of Eygpt
- The Rugrats Movie
- The Iron Giant
- South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
- Toy Story 2

A lot of Bluth films have been mentioned so far, but one of my favourites as a child was Anastasia and I think it still holds up till now. Anastasia still is one of the more interesting female characters I’ve seen in animation.

I sorted my ratings by animation and release date on IMDB and ended up with this list of animated 1990-1999 movies I enjoyed.

Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
Fantasia 2000
FernGully: The Last Rainforest
The Iron Giant
James and the Giant Peach
The Junky’s Christmas
Linnea in Monet’s Garden
The Lion King
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Old Man and the Sea
Perfect Blue
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
The Thief and the Cobbler
Wallace & Gromit in The Wrong Trousers
Wallace and Gromit in A Close Shave
Whisper of the Heart

Here are some others I either haven’t seen, but know enjoy a great reputation, or didn’t enjoy as much as the others.

Battle Angel
Jetsons: The Movie (Apparently not many people saw this since it never gets mentioned as one of the movies way too similar to Avatar. Just like people didn’t see Where the Green Ants Dream, which is obviously much better than the Jetsons movie.)
The King and the Mockingbird
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion
Mulan

It looks like quite a sound decade of animation to me. :)
