The Best Worst Films of All Time

Claus Harding

Many say he’s an ‘auteur’ in his own whacked-out way. Two films by Edward D. Wood stand as incredible classics:

“Orgy of the Dead” and “Bride of the Monster”
They both take on completely unintentional qualities from their lack of money, talent and planning. They are educational viewing in that they show that despite violating every element of conventional storytelling, a mood is, at times, still created, making the films resemble surrealist works.

Bela Lugosi’s overacting in “Bride” is something that very few actors could top. And yet, within the mad universe of the film, in a way, you get used to it as ‘making sense.’

Blood Diamond
Crash by Haggis

There’s only one for me:
Grease 2.
I love it…….Biker Heaven, Maxwell Caulfiled dressed like a reject from Judas Priest and Michelle Pfeiffer dancing like she’s just been given an enema.
The best two hours I’ve ever wasted.

Dolomite (the 1975) not bad enough to be really enjoyable , and among other things the boom mike should get a credit it appears so often

I knew Tron would touch a nerve. Let me ask all the Tron fans, when was the last time you actually watched it? When the 25th anniversary addition came out, I was so excited, but when I actually put it on, I couldn’t even get through Ram’s demise before I fell asleep. The effects were groundbreaking for its time and it does have some very cool geek moments, but it really is not a good movie (ok so maybe unwatchable was a bit harsh)…

Also, I have to agree that Starship Troopers should not be mentioned in this thread, if you know anything about Verhoven’s background you realize that the film was a clever critique of society’s willingness to except a totalatarian based government in the face of conflict. And the fact that he put Doogie Howser and 90210 alums in SS uniforms was genius!!! Now the sequels on the other hand…

A great little film called Pieces. I have seen it so many times and I laugh my head off each time. By the time the karate teacher jumps in, your brain is gone, Charlie, it is gone!

Trolls 2.

Oh wait, does anyone remember a little in-line skating movie called Airborne? Basically a surfer kid from California moves into his Aunt and Uncle’s house in Cleveland and tries to win over the kids at the local high school with his eastern-zen ways. But in the end it all comes down to a 15 minutes in-line skating race down a very steep hill…featuring a young Jack Black and Seth Green…terrible but highly rewatchable…

Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. With a title like that, you know it’s gotta be good!

For an education in how not to make a movie, watch the films of Coleman Francis:

Red Zone Cuba
The Skydivers
and
The Beast of Yucca Flats

A veritable orgy of ineptitude.

Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 was a lot of fun, definitely watching that again. Mr. Ice Cream Man is immeasurably sbig (so-bad-it’s-good) and inspired a drinking game among my friends which we couldn’t actually complete because we were laughing too hard. And anything “directed” (I use the term very generously) by Godfrey Ho, he of a thousand aliases, all of them crap. His impressive filmography includes such classics as Thunder Ninja Kids: Wonderful Mission, Leopard Ninja Fist and Robo-Kickboxer – Power Of Justice. This guy now teaches film at degree level… yikes.

um, only a little gem called Cool As Ice (1991)

it’s a remake; of what you’ll never guess.

One more:

Being Danish, I am bound by law to have this DVD.

“Reptilicus.” The only monster movie ever made in Denmark. Pathetic-looking creature gets re-born and trashes a cardboard Copenhagen, while the extras dutifully run through the streets. I won’t even go into the acidic green slime.

The effects work has to be among the bottom three in the history of the movies. So does the acting (sadly, by some well-known Danish actors way out of their area of experience. None of them spoke English, for one.)
When the producer is American International and even they say it is too bad and has to be improved before release, you know you are down there.

At least they didn’t make a sequel…

If you collect such things, get the DVD now as is has gone out of print.

Any of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes are hilarious. My favorite is the episode where they watch a horrible Canadian film called The Final Sacrifice.

Sextette (1978). A geriatric Mae West seduces Timothy Dalton while Tony Curtis, Dom DeLuise, Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Keith Moon and a whole host of shiny guys look on in admiration.

It’s a musical, by the by. And Mae West is acting all “Mae West”, making raunchy double entendres and raising her eyebrow flirtatiously, despite being 84 at the time of shooting. Sick bags at the ready.

Showgirls is absolutely hilarious, as is the brilliant Christopher Walken vehicle MCBAIN.

Ralch, that’s it. The one and only (I do wish they would release the Danish-language version on DVD as well.)

I’m standing by my original two, including Starship Troopers, but I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned The Island of Dr. Moreau, directed by Frankenheimer and starring a latter-day Brando in a role where, once seen, will never be forgotten.

A must-see treasure trove of bad cinema.

Superman IV: The quest for Peace. Anybody remember the scene where Nuclear Man has kidnapped Mariel Hemingway (for no apparent reason) and flies her into outer space? She slips from his grip and almost falls, thanks to all the space gravity, all the while her hair is being whipped around by the space wind…

@Anthony: The first time I heard Tenacious D I said “Hey, it’s the guy from Airborne!”

@Halston: So… Rowsdower… is that a stupid name?

@ The Corduroy Suit: I don’t feel like a true cinephile, having seen only 2/3 of the Coleman Francis oeuvre…
