Seeing the ratings for The Woman Who Drinks, I’m a little bit nervous about watching it now…
You shouldn’t be so worried, it’s actually a brilliant film and it’s amazing to see that it is Émond’s first fiction film.
Next up for me is Two Drifters, and with that I’ll finally be able to vote in a match (though I’ve seen nine R1 films so far).
Out of 12 seen, I think my favourite so far is Berta’s Motives. A great roster of films, though, with not a single dud among them.
Next I’m watching the Krolikiewicz (it’s only with repetition that I’ll memorize how to spell his name! Pronouncing it, on the other hand…). Very excited.
To help promote Masahiro Shinoda I’ve asked Criterion to release Pale Flower on dvd and blu ray.
Voila! ;)

Nice. Very responsive, that Criterion crew.
^^We need a “Like” button for posts.
There is one—I just liked your post from my Home page, though I’m not sure what that does.
I suppose I can’t argue with more Japanese New Wave releases.
It doesn’t do anything, and that drives me crazy.
I wish there was a way to go back and read all the posts I’ve liked ) :
That’s what made you crazy? We finally have the root cause.
- Pointlessly clicks ‘like’ -
Some needs to find a print of the Bertolucci pick, The Spider’s Strategem that isn’t a VHS rip.
I wish it were coming out before my match so you all could see Pale Flower with a quality transfer rather than on netflix or youtube…
anyway here are the rest of the May 2011 criterion releases
Pale Flower certainly deserves the treatment and I’m more than willing to shell out to have it on Blu-ray. Here’s hoping for more Shinoda to come!
As for Through and Through… speechless. Who is this Krolikiewicz and why have I never heard of him until now?
awesome riss! i was going to ask if you were going to do another one of these! ♥
wow! sexy.
i’m voting for the polish santa claus, 4th row down.
very nice!

Is it me or are there too many old people this year? :P
Dimitris, my friend, your director is 81 years old (still green, I admit), here in Romania the young generation think of him as a relic :)) … Good luck though! I have to see the works his opponents, but i belive you have my votes already!
Thanks for that, Riss – as I’m sure someone mentioned last year, that’s a healthy obsession.
my director is only 33
We need some female directors in the next one: Ulrike Ottinger, Joyce Wieland, Miranda July, Kelly Reichardt, etc. etc. etc. :) :) :) :)
Where there’s a Kelly Reichardt, there’s a Barbara Loden…
Barbara Loden’s one excellent film
Unfortunately, too short a career for the competition, but I urge everyone to seek it out.
Seems to be a leaning towards ‘balding old man’ this year.
Apologies for late introduction to my particular baldy, life’s been getting in the way recently, will try and sort it out this weekend (and try and watch a bunch of films while I’m at it).
My bad. I still don’t understand how these competitions even work.

Yeah, I actually thought it was a rather good film, cleverly stuctured, that highlighted the oppressive nature of a woman’s role in the household back in the 50s or so through a focused character study. It’s not at all an unintelligent film, the acting is excellent, and by working backwards it hits some powerful fatalistic notes that any other structure would have missed.
Émond has won at least one fan so far.
