…for a minute there I thought this was gonna be another hate thread (for women) , but I see to to explore these issues.
probably because she’s being forced down our throats as the ultimate hipster weird chick. it’s marketing. men would feel this less because she’s very attractive, which has been known to affect their decision making process. anyway i don’t hate her; i don’t care about her one way or the other. also i think this topic is borderline sexist
Hahaha best thread title ever… Cuz it’s hilariously accurate.
I’m not sure what it is. I guess the obvious response would be that men dislike charming attractive men out of jealousy and women hate charming attractive women out of jealousy, but that’s not a phenomenon I see as consistent. Pretty much just Zooey!
I’m a woman?
But haven’t we established that most posters here are male, so animosity towards Zoe isn’t a girl thing?? Plus, I don’t find her annoying and I do find Clooney annoying 75%of the time.
She’s cute, has been in some good movies and doesn’t annoy me. Is she a great actress? No, but she doesn’t stink up the screen and she’s cute. I think Matthew McConaughey would be the male equivalent.
Strangly enough, Katy Perry does annoy me even though she looks like Zooey.
I think she’s a lousy actress and my testicles are right where I left ’em last time I checked.
see how brad mentioned twice that she’s cute? lol.

Don’t mean to start a fight, but I think this idea that when men make judgements based on sex it’s a crime, but when women do it there’s no problem is obnoxious and sexist in itself. It’s like if I’m walking with a group of friends and the girls see a cute guy they freak out, but if guys dd the same thing they’d be called women-obsessed or even pigs.
This is pretty off topic, but I felt like saying it.
Yeah Zooey Deschanel is attractive, and she has a pretty voice and is charming on screen and in interviews. I don’t think it’s despicable to like an actress for those reasons. No one’s claiming she’s the greatest actress of our time.
I prefer Zoe Kazan’s bangs.
i never said it was a crime, drew. it’s a fact of nature. don’t get all defensive
I hate every gorgeous women which i can’t go to bed with, this means i hate all the gorgeous women on earth.
Ruby said also i think this topic is borderline sexist
OK, I’m guessing you’re thinking that this can be sexist because we’ll be making generalizations about (stereotyping) men and women? I guess, for me, I think men and women can respond differently to actors differently and the gender of the actors comes in to play. Men may dislike female actors for reasons that differ from females. You don’t think that we can’t make meaningful generalizations about this?
@Ari
I’m curious to hear why you dislike Deschanel.
@Brad
I think Matthew McConaughey would be the male equivalent.
I’m guessing he’s too “pretty,” smug? I can sort of see that, and, just by looking at him, he seems like a jerk, but he doesn’t come across that way on the screen for me. So I don’t have a problem with him. Tom Cruise is the same way. I would think that I wouldn’t like him, but then I kind of do.
Then there’s Keanu Reeves. The guy is dorky, but then I end up liking him in action roles. (I draw the line at serious drama—Shakespeare?!) I’m curious to hear how women feel about this dorky quality? I think most guys don’t like it—especially in a drama or action film.
@Bijoux
But haven’t we established that most posters here are male, so animosity towards Zoe isn’t a girl thing??
Well, let’s ask—do a lot of guys (besides Ari and Hell) hate Zooey?
I’m sure it all has to do with looks.
If women hate Zooey, it’s because she’s hot!
this is what i meant, jazz ^ it’s playing into that stereotype that women hate other women because of looks
If I only hated women who are hotter than I am then I’d love all women.
>>I’m guessing he’s too “pretty,” smug? I can sort of see that, and, just by looking at him, he seems like a jerk<<
That’s also my reaction to him, but most women I know find him very attractive (until they find out he doesn’t believe in deoderant) , so those other qualities go from annoying to endearing. Likewise, Zooey’s cuteness, for me, is her dominant quality, but I can imagine that being annoying to someone who doesn’t find her attractive. In other words, Jazz, I’m agreeing with your main point.
But women get no judgement passed on them while men do have judgement passed on them!! Not only is it not a crime but it’s not gender-specific.
lol bijoux :P
i never said it was, drew, but traditionally women’s looks are much more important than men’s in hollywood. that’s because men are making the films. sure, there’s a few mimbos out there, like mcconaughey and keanu reeves and if women are going to see them based on their looks of course it’s the same thing
@Santino
If women hate Zooey, it’s because she’s hot!
I know you’re probably joking (right?), but, seriously, there’s a lot of hot actresses. Do people like or dislike her strictly based on her looks? There’s gotta be something else. For example, Sharon Stone and Halle Berry are extremely hot, imo, but I really didn’t like them—partly because I didn’t care for their acting. What also annoyed me was the critical acclaim they seemed to receive for their acting. (When Jennifer Connelly got nominated, I felt the same way about her.) What’s potentially interesting to me is that men and women may have different reasons (or maybe not).
I think the reason Ruby gave in her first post is a big one in the case of Zoe.
@Ruby
this is what i meant, jazz ^ it’s playing into that stereotype that women hate other women because of looks
A genuine question: but can’t we openly discuss and explore this issue? I mean, if women think this isn’t true, then they can express this view and make a case (if they so choose)? And if it is true (as a generalization), is that such an offensive thing?
I know women who resent women that are more attractive, but somehow I think there’s something more going on here and in general with actors. Zooey Deschanel is attractive, but I don’t think she’s the most attractive or sexy actor (not sex pot sexy, anyway). Imo, Meghan Fox or Jessica Alba are way hotter in that regard, so something more seems to be going on.
Here are some guesses:
1. She does have that helpless and even ditzy quality that some guys find attractive, and I can see how this would annoy some women;
2. She sort of has a more normal look and she has the vibe that she could hang around the more hipster, nerdy types. So while Jessica Alba and Meghan Fox are very sexy, they might not be invading the same turf, to the same degree, that ZD is.
@Brad
In other words, Jazz, I’m agreeing with your main point.
Wait, which one?
@Drew
But women get no judgement passed on them while men do have judgement passed on them!! Not only is it not a crime but it’s not gender-specific.
Young man, this is an argument not worth having. Learn from the mistakes of your elders. ;)
>>In other words, Jazz, I’m agreeing with your main point.
Wait, which one?<<
This one: “I wondered if men and women respond to actors differently.”
>>Zooey Deschanel is attractive, but I don’t think she’s the most attractive or sexy actor (not sex pot sexy, anyway). Imo, Meghan Fox or Jessica Alba are way hotter in that regard<<
It’s the difference between preferring a Mary Ann or a Ginger (I vote Mary Ann)
Has anyone seen the SNL skit…

Ruby said, probably because she’s being forced down our throats as the ultimate hipster weird chick. it’s marketing.
But is the exposure the issue or the type of person and territory they want her to inhabit? For example, did women feel the same way about Meg Ryan in the 90s? She wasn’t the ultimate hipster weird chick, but she was the ultimate cute rom-com chick.
@Brad
Got it. But are you basically saying the difference comes down to looks (i.e., guys like hot actresses, while women don’t like them; women like hot actors, while guys don’t like them)?
I don’t find her ditzy at all. I know a lot of guys like the ditzy thing, but I am definitely not one of them. In (500) Days of Summer she’s the dominant person in the relationship and appears to be intelligent.
Ruby, Maybe I’m being sexist again, but there seems to be so much more disdain from women towards men about liking cute women than men towards women for liking cute men. I can’t imagine most guys expressing even mild annoyance at a woman who says she likes McConaughey.
she’s extremely popular… and with that, there are just as many people that like her, as dislike her. same can be said for clooney. so exposure is probably part of it.
also, its not just women hating… most of the guys i know are annoyed by her. but they still think she’s hot.
personally i find her obnoxious, and i don’t like her voice at all… so as enticing as those big eyes are, they aren’t enough to lure me into the theater
Jazzaloha
When Zooey Deschanel comes up in discussion, I sense an animosity towards her, which leaves me a little bemused. And I sense that women feel this way more than men. I wondered about this—why certain actors seem to really annoy people. George Clooney, on these boards, also seems to have a similar effect (at least towards Den, anyway. ;) So this got me thinking—in addition to wondering about why certain actors are so polarizing, I wondered if men and women respond to actors differently. This is a thread to to explore these issues.
