The Dr. Dre Appreciation thread

Nate the Movie Mate

Dr. Dre was the pioneer of gangsta rap and the former of G-funk. He is known around the world as a respected hip-hop producer. He was originally a member of the sexist, offensive, controversial and incendiary rap group N.W.A. (Niggas With Attitude).

90’s rap wouldn’t be the same without this great guy! He’s funny to listen to!

West Coast Rap and Death Row Records are the Shit!

He’s alright but I could think of a lot more musical artists more worthy of mention here. Has he made any contributions to the art of cinema?

Nate the Movie Mate

No, he has not besides some very amusing music videos such as Nuthin But a G’ Thang.

And there are tons and tons of musical artists worthy of mention here besides this guy.

I actually don;t find Dr.Dre that talented, just very very funny. His obscentities and lyrics make me laugh whenever I listen to him.

All gangster and pimpin hoes and all that jazz gits me everytime…

His work on Whiteboyz as Don Flip Crew #1 was exceptional, truly reminiscent of an early Olivier.

Though I am a fan of rap music (as odd as it is coming from me ), this doesn’t really belong on this board. This is cinema, not music.

And yes, JP Belmondo is always good for the liberal (and funny!) use of sarcasm. We salute you.

Would a thread on Public Enemy and it’s excessive use in Spike Lee’s Do the Right thing be more appropriate?

I just wanted to see the responses I would get from cinephiles who were familiar with such a laughable thing as “gangsta rap.”

All I have to say is
WU-TANG CLAN AIN’T NUTHING TA F* WIT!

Jay Leighty

I figured this was in jest. The Public Enemy thread would be more appropriate. You could discuss influential uses of rap songs in films. You could even debate wether Spike Lee’s videos for PE qualified as cinematic but this is not really the way to get a discussion going here. I think people here generally resent this kind of thread and I was expecting you to get a “go back to imdb!” within the first few posters.

double post, apologies….um, I would like to take this space then to agree with l. alexi ‘wu-tang clan reallly ain’t nuttin ta fuck wit.. Protect ya Neck.. I’m out

Nate the Movie Mate

I hate imdb, have you seen their top 100 films of all time by users?! The Dark Knight was the second greatest film of all time at one point.

Fucking ridiculous.

At least half the people here know who Tarkovsky is while you won’t see a Tarkovsky film on any top lists hardly at imdb.

I prefer A Tribe Called Quest.

Nate, Dr Dre was awesome back in the 90’s. He peaked with doggystyle, production wise. Once the 2000’s entered his sound get less complex, a sign of the times. I’m still waiting for Detox, in between his steroid production he should put the effort on music.

Now, can we get back to movies?

Mister Dob

Peaked with Doggystyle? The Chronic was his masterpiece, unfortunately he’s no rap Kubrick or Kurosawa..

The Mayor Of Hell

Did he die or something…?

Alanedit

Hey man, I meant production wise. I did not say Chronic wasn’t his masterpiece, which it is.

I actually really liked his soundtrack work and the NWA albums, his sound was funky, jazzy, hard, but always in sync with the song. WTF happened to the guy, I dunno. The beat to Natual Born Killaz is a milestone in production, among many others.

Mos Def is the best rapper ever but Dr. Dre is pretty good.

Illmatic is a tight album.

Bobby Wise

no, gangsta rap isn’t laughable.

yes, dr. dre is the stanley kubrick of hip-hop (biggie smalls was the black alfred hitchcock).

yes, “the chronic” is his masterpiece.

yes, wu-tang clan aint nothin to fuck with.

yes, musical discussions really don’t belong on this site (unless in relation to cinema, hip-hop films for example).

i agree that gangsta rap isn’t laughable in the least, as over time it has come to program our youth to be rampant consumers who become violent if they can’t get their designer products.

if i can’t get my louis vuitton, i’m gonna cap someone….peace.

Andre Rehal

He was in Training Day, he played a corrupt cop and Ethan Hawke punches him in the face.

Bobby Wise

art doesnt program youth. society does. art reflects that society, that reality. it doesnt create it.

Nate the Movie Mate

I didn;t mean that gangsta rap is laughable, I like it.

The lyrics just make me laugh is all…

Honestly, I’d rather a Dr. Dre thread than another This Director vs. That Director thread.
At least this is refreshingly G?

Ghost Dog soundtrack is fresh, I never use the word fresh unless I’m talking about hip hop.
