In cases of ties for 5th place or 3 nominees tying for 4th place, there are 6 nominees in a category. Any nominees who appeared in other categories are disqualified from the Special Recognition category. Only one of these was the case as some people cited Martin Scorsese here for his work on Hugo, but Scorsese is nominated for Best Director for that film so no special recognition is needed. The Special Recognition finalists are a pretty amusing bunch to me.

The top films receiving nominations are:
The Tree of Life: 8
Hugo: 7
A Separation: 6
Melancholia: 6
Drive: 5
The Turin Horse: 4

Not coincidentally, these 6 are also the Best Picture finalists.

The rest of this game is simple. Post a single vote for who you want to win in each category among the nominees either in this thread or in a PM to me. Preferably, people will only make final votes in those categories in which they have seen all the nominees. Naturally I cannot enforce this so people will have to go by the honor system. Feel free to make your case for nominees you support in this thread.

To give people time to catch up on the finalists, the voting deadline is 11:59 p.m. EST, Saturday, February 18.

When I reveal the winners, I will also provide vote counts/statistics.

I don’t get the appeal of DRIVE, but still, this is a much superior list than what the Oscars came up with.

@ Zvelf:

Certified Copy is in the Special Recognition category and the Best Writing catgeory.

I would love to vote but I won’t be able to see all the nominees by the 18th.

zvelf

CERTIFIED COPY is in the Writing category for its writing. It’s in the Special Recognition category to recognize the entire film. In the Scorsese case, he was simultaneously being honored as director of HUGO in both categories.

I am speechless to see that Jonah Hill did not make the final list for Best Supporting.

How come Certified Copy qualifies? It was released in May 2010…

Miasma

^I want to learn more about this, though I’m sure it’s been discussed at length in another forum.

Santino

Wow. Surprised to see that two of the six best picture nominees mirror the Oscars. And with the exception of Certified Copy, all the writing nominees are also up for Oscars. I guess Mubi has changed.

Maximilian, CERTIFIED COPY qualifies because I amended the rules amid complaints about IMDB’s selection of year. The rule was revised such that films IMDB list as 2010 qualify if they are also listed with commercial distribution in countries in 2011.

I find Drive to be painfully overrated – and perhaps Winding Refn’s worst film to date

Octavio, no, these are not official awards in the sense that the site’s owners advocate for them. They are Mubi awards in the sense that the Mubi community came up with the nominees and are now determining winners. The nominees were derived in a previous thread in which users could submit up to 3 nominees in each category, ranked or unranked. I tallied them and the 5 (or 6 in case of ties) nominees which got the most points/mentions in each category are now the finalists.

Anyone have any kind of link to Turin Horse? That is the only additional thing I’d want to watch before voting.
