Observations:

THE TREE OF LIFE romped winning 4 of the main 9 categories. A SEPARATION actually led Best Picture most of the voting period, but TREE made a big surge in the last few days to win it. TREE was most dominant in the Cinematography category in which Emmanuel Lubezki got 26 votes with second place Fred Kelemen merely earning 5. Asghar Farhadi was nearly as dominant in the writing category for A SEPARATION.

Michael Fassbender barely edged Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon for Best Actor which was neck and neck the entire time. Sareh Bayat managed a tremendous upset over Jessica Chastain for Best Supporting Performance. Chastain led the nomination round with 17 points while Bayat barely made the cut with 10, and Bayat also potentially had to split the vote with her equally terrific SEPARATION co-star Leila Hatami.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO won Best Score over DRIVE by the slimmest of margins. Both received 11 votes in the finalist round, but Reznor and Ross led Cliff Martinez by 1 point 26 to 25 in the nomination round in order to take the victory.

THE MILL AND THE CROSS and TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY both had initial surges to take a big lead in Production Design, but HUGO kept up and eventually took the win, which was not entirely unexpected in that it won the nomination round big.

Andy Serkis easily led the Special Recognition category in the nomination round, but Raul Ruiz easily took the win in the finalist round followed by CERTIFIED COPY.

8 of the 10 nominees I voted for won, so I’m pretty pleased with the final results. The ones I voted for which didn’t win were A SEPARATION for Picture and CERTIFIED COPY for Special Recognition, but I loved TREE OF LIFE and think Ruiz is perfectly deserving (as I also loved MYSTERIES OF LISBON) so I’m fine with their winning.

I nailed 6/10 but that’s not the point. Happy for Sareh Bayat getting the recognition she so deserves for the part. Great job by zvelf organising the awards !

Nice job zvelf, hopefully next year we can get even more people participating. Maybe an expansion of the categories could be on the cards too (just spitballin’).

I’m happy with all the results. No matter what the final tally was, all the films that were nominated were deserving to win.

Except maybe Hugo.

Thanks for the appreciation, everyone. I think the results turned out well, much better than the Oscars will this Sunday.

Thanks Zvelf ;)
